hey natho how big was your jack when you got him ? i have a barra too thats about 20-25 cm aswell but i put him in the big tank , just incase he ate the jack for dinner . was your jack and barra the same size when you put them in ?

alot of them now have microchips in them, to stop all the illegal selling of them, when mine was your size, i was buying the big protein pellets from the aquarium, like the ones up at barra farm, crush them up into little bits and he loved them and still does...but now he finds them hard to swallow becuase he knocked out his canines smashing a poddy against the glass

Microchips, well 20cm fish, they'd want to be "micro" to fit. Then U'd have "fish and chips" ;D. I've gota get me one of these, it sounds great. I reckon I should get a very big tank though, so he grows BIG.

my jack was about 5 cm when i got him paid $110. he was by himself for a month , the barra was about 15 cm when i put him in. so yeah jack is boss. im goin to put the barra in my 3ft tank soon
Nico.d.R
18-11-2008, 05:36 PM
so they want to micro chip they wild jacks or the dpi bred jacks ?
i also considerd catching a legal jack and converting it , the only problem is i never catch any jack lol . you would need a big tank to try and have a wild caught legal size jack in so i didnt kill it self smashing into the glass .
i have a 5ft tank that he will go in , i dont trust the floor where i want it so its in the shed at the moment , i might support the floor from under the house and bring it up stairs but until than he will have to stay where he is so i can see him .
cheers nico

I think it would stress a wild fish to go in to a tank thats why i got a small one he is starting to get an "attitude "now he will bite me if i move his cave and bites at my fingers against the glass .A wild fish would take along time to tame and it would need live food ,when it gets over the stress of being pulled out of a river!. Jacks are not hard too find in shops they may be expensive .But if u ask me are worth every dollar

Its was a 2ft tank i had him in .he was a really shy fish when i first got him he was about 10cm or so and really thin. he was fed nothing but the best mainly small shrimp ,herrring, whitebait and glassies .Remember the quicker the livies the better the show !heres a quick video of my jack and barra(when i first got him) eatin some krill and pelletshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg6dSO7DSyw

10-02-2009, 06:17 PM
wow 35cm jack , how much was on him ? i got mine at smiths and i have not seen any since . they get them from the dpi maybe try getting hold of the dpi breeding people i think its at bribie or ask smiths to chase one up or find out how long till the next batch will be ready . They eat so much i have to spend a few hours a week getting food for him , well he eats pellets but he loves the feeders .

yeah, it was a good looking fish, apparenty they were holding it for the original owner or something while he moved. seen one around the same size few years ago at zillmere, had $450 on him! yeah, ill ask next time im in there, most natives and fish like that are only in supply in the warmer months, so might be the only ones for the summer, who knows,
cheers mate

Boys, is there anything wrong with catching a wild fish and converting it to fresh, or is that a no no? :-/
Nico.d.R
11-02-2009, 06:15 PM
i thought about it , but apart from that being illegal (in qld) , there would be a chance of killing it while converting to fresh so i didnt bother . i have seen them about the size off my jack(now) for up to $350 .
cheers nico

The bigger the fish the harder it would be to convert imo. Not saying it isn't possible but it might be hard with a 35cm Jack. You would certainly have a lot of live bait to collect every week!! until when / if you can get him over to Pellets or bloodworm's?
I am sure if your interested and post a new thread someone with more experience could give you a better idea.
Cheers

hows it illegal to do it....only if its undersize obviously or is there a rule you cant do it, youd probably be better leaving it salt anyway
Nico.d.R
12-02-2009, 11:19 PM
getting a small jack would be illegal , i wouldnt try with a legal sized jack because even if you had a massive tank it would be hard to get a big wild jack to adapt to a confined space . im not a expert just an opinion .
cheers
