Gday jaredluke you don't need to spend much to get started if your handy on the tools.

First you'll need a rod lathe which can be some V blocks or rollers. There's some pics here of some lathes.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showthread.php?t=130085&highlight=rod+lathe or google rod lathe.

Rod blanks- depending what your going to make and quality will determine $ pick a price $20 - $200+
Reel seats start from under $10
Grips start from under $5 cork or duralon
Guides start at under $2
Then you'll need thread, CP color preserver, resin, 5 and 24hr arldite.

Other useful info can be found at http://www.rodbuilding.org/login.php? look in the library.
You tube type in rod building, look for the mudhole vids.

Rod building bits at http://therodworks.com.au/,, oz rods.com.au (site still not finished),, mo tackle.com.au. From OS http://www.mudhole.com/ cabellas .com, http://www.acidrod.com/index.html

There's books and dvd's about rod building as well.

But there is nothing like being "home built and hooked up"

Hope this gets the ball rolling.

Dave.

The other hint I was told to do is to put the spool of thread in a cup on it's side not on it's end so the thread doesn't twist .
