whats the bait of choice for the big ones down the goldy? Here on the sunshine coast we use soldier crabs in the lower reaches of the rivers and bloodworms in the upper reaches. Interested to hear if its the same down there? i have heard some places down there they prefer live prawns?

Thanks fella's i must admit i am a bit of a Whiting addict i just love catching them.
Blinky
that one went 650 gr got a 44cm one 700 gr today, they are a little bit skinny at this time of year because they have finished spawning i have 6 here over 40 cm to take to Dave Downie's seminar if anyone wants to see them.
Jeffo
i use bloodworms for my Whiting fishing the prawns you refer to are what we call jelly prawns and they work terrific and when i am to old to dig bloodworms i will be useing them as they are the next best bait for big Whiting IMO.
Cheers Wayne.

Thanks Wayne, I really wasn't after your secret spot, mate, just there was an older gentleman heading out whiting fishing, as I was coming in at about 1am on Thursday night or Friday morning I guess it was. I don't know how old you are but I thought to myself, I hope I'm doing that when I'm 80+ odd years old. Getting a tinny into the water and going off fishing by myself at 1am, at that age is some thing to be admired. I'm struggling at 47, so I butter start getting fit.
I bet those whiting pull hard mate.

Great fish yet again.
I caught some similar (2 x 38cm) at the Moorochy river but was a bit, no, very lucky.
Was at your previous seminar at Southside Toyota. Don't you lose a lot of short shank hooks due to gut hooking?
Do fish the top of the bank, drop-off or in the deep water off the drop-off?
Cheers

Well done to you all on catching Whiting of that Quality.
One of my Fav species to catch.
Great Fish Youngy, I fish the Nerang a bit and have landed a couple 40cm or better.
I've always considered a 40cm fish to be a stonker. I would give my leftie just to see a 50cm version Fadil !!
I'm blown away by the fact you caught more than one "Fish of a life-time" in the one session !!! WOW !!!!!
Without giving your location away, any other tips you can give me ?
Cheers

CSSTLEMAINE yes you are right i do go through a few hooks useing short shank but compared to the price of petrol and a few other things they are cheap.
Because i use worms useing short shank hooks makes them go further and if the Whiting is legal you get your hook back.
I dont know where you fish in the Maroochy but the edge of the sandbanks around Goat and Channel Islands are not to bad on the bottom half of the tide and the sand banks betweenPetrie Creek and Bli Bli Bridge on the top half of the tide there is also a hole north of Bli Bli Bridge that is reported to hold some of the biggest Whiting in the river,i have never fished it but i do know where it is, but if i said it would upset some mates.
Just remember the 20 minute rule no legal whiting in 20 min MOVE catching fish and they stop biteing for 20 min MOVE.
Hope some of this helps you to CRAGIE.
Top of tide i will fish the sandbanks but usually the edge or where the water runs over the sand bank and drops into deeper water. cheers Wayne.

Sorry mate but you are going to have to come up with photos on a ruler before I beleive 50+cm whiting.
I've been fishing the Gold Coast chasing whiting for 20 years and NEVER seen one over 46cm.
I've weighed one at 1.005kg (it was 42cm long and not caught by me), measured them to 45cm but never over 50cm.
Show me proof and I'll eat my words.
Youngie is the real deal - backed it up with 44cm whiting on display at the Northside seminar - blew everyone away.
no_luck - get a decent camera, show us the photos - can't wait to see them.

no_luckJeez they getting even bigger now.55cm. Until i see a photo of a fish over 50cm i think your smoking something you shouldnt be to get those measurements. Mate i bet no one on this site has ever caught, seen or heard of a 50cm whiting let alone a 55cm and getting 5 over 50cm in one night. Hi guys,
I was just wondering where i could dig for bloodworms on the gold coast area?
I have never dug for them so any rough areas would be fine. I don't mind learning something new.
Plus always good to get local bait rather than paying for over priced bait in the freezer.
Well done youngy!
Cheers Cappy

12-03-2008, 04:10 PM
Sorry Cappy that is one thing i wont divulge because every time i told someone in the past, 6 months later i have had to find a new spot for myself.
Most muddy creeks will have some worms in them but in all honesty if you have a good job do an hours overtime and buy some bloodworms much easier on the back.
If you do try to dig your own check to make sure you are permitted to do so in that area, as there are big fines for illegal digging. Cheers Wayne.

Uncle Nuggy,I think the fish that Old Fat Ferrel is refering to is the one that won the Straddy Comp a few years ago i never saw it myself but have spoken to plenty of people that did, they told me it was more the shape of a Rugby League ball than a Whiting. It is the only verified whiting over a kilo that i know about. cheers Wayne.

I don't know if these count as they are king george whiting. I caught these at pt lonsdale just out of geelong in victoria. The one on the esky lid is 46cm and the other, which my mate is holding is 50cm. These are nice size king george whiting but are babys to the ones i have seen caught there. I saw a fella bring one in, i dead set thought it was a big salmon until he got it up on the pier. MASSIVE!!!
