I was just reading the post about the huge Tailor by Nugget and was wondering what sort of rigs are being used to fish for these bigger fish.
I am currently using a Penn 850, traverse-X 10-15 kg rod (it is my heavy spin stick so don't knock it), 10kg fireline, 50lb trace material and a couple of 6/0 chemically sharpened hooks. I normally run a pyramid sinker above the trace on one of those free running sliders. I am also using flesh baits of Tailor, Mullet or Mac Tuna. So far this season I have not cought anything over 2.2 kg despite about 40hrs effort. So any hints or tips would be appreciated.
What sort of setups and rigs etc is everyone else using?
Neil, IF I was going fishing for big tailor in the surf I would be using a rod about 13 to 14 feet long with a light tip (eg. gold coaster.surf coaster. north coaster. bronte)with a 61/2. inch alvey reel, the thinnist line about 15 Lbs breaking strain 30 lbs trace.lead would be size 2,(about as big as a pea)and I would bait spin for tailor. No one else answered so I thought I would put in my 2 cents worth. spindles.
Thanks Spindles. The outfit you describe is my normal old faithfull Magsurf Alvey 650A combo. This has caught heaps of Tailor over the years but none over the magic 10lb mark. What I am trying to do is fish big flesh baits specifically targetting big Tailor and Jew.
Cheers Neil
hook - big as needed to just clear the flesh on a fillet. use a single, chemical sharpened - 2 reasons in a big tussle ganged hooks twist & break at the eye ALSO as the tussle heats up the entry point of your hooks rips & opens up. A single can & will pass all the way thru that hole & grab at another point on the fish - a gang rig can only sink as deep as the gape. Singles will usually clear the gills rakes on a big fish, gangs this is very rare. You have much better control of a fish the deeper the hooks are, if you have a good trace.
trace - wire, that simple I've tried abrasion resistant nylons for many years - you get fewer fish on wire - but the big ones don't frig around. Have a look at the fish in Nuggets pic - trace needs to clear the mouth if the bait is in the gut - that long. Shorter trace bigger risk - but bigger casts
sinker - big as needed to get into deep water & stay on the zone. Tailor don't like sand in their gills.
Thanks Chris.
I will try the wire next time. Last trip to Moreton one of my many "sharks" cleared the water twice on his way out back. It was very clear due to the full moon. At the time I called him for a huge Tailor but he bit through after about a minute. I convinced myself it was a shark and felt much better about loosing him. I now wonder what it really was.
the take is different from the NATTER,NATTER, NATTER of a chopper.
It's like ya mate grabs the line & tugs it real hard twice THUMP, THUMP & then ties you off to a passing speed boat. I think they grab it, swallow it & run.
You've gotta ignore the pissweak bites. Keep putting bait & activity into that water.
i've haven't got over 4kg yet - i assume they maintain this obnoxious style of attack the bigger they get - I can't imagine what twice that muscle weight & a bit would do, it blows my mind.
