    Which Rod - Advice Please

I am not a fisherman, but am the mother of one turning 21 in a couple of weeks. I would like to give him a 'special' rod, but have no knowledge in this area.
He fishes mainly in the harbour & still rivers, both freash & salt water. He doesn't beach fish.
    Thanks for the advice.
PS We are in Sydney, if that is any help.

I would suggest a general purpose 2 piece rod. If you go to your local tackle shop they will be able to show you a good range of rods, but this site sells some very good rods as well. Find out what kind of reel he will be using on it first. If he will be using an eggbeater type look for a rod between 8 foot and 9 foot 6' with a long butt. If he is going to use an Alvey sidecast reel he should use a short butt.
I would expect to pay between $45 and $120 depending on manufacturer. If you want a "Special rod" I suggest you look on this site in the tackle section under Snyder Glas rods. I own a 9'6" Snyder Glas Raider one piece and recommend it for all general fishing. I paid $120 for it and its "My Special Rod"
My son owns the same rod in the 2 piece version. You wont go wrong.
    cheers
