leader material for mackeral
Afternoon everyone,
Looking for help on what type of leader to use for mackeral,do you really need wire for casting slugs and trolling for them.If so is it better to use nylon coated multi strand as i have heard they sometime's shy away from single strand. Also what is generally considered the best leader to use when floating live bait's out the back for them.I would appreciate any help on this as i have not really chased them before not successfully anyway.Thank's in advance
Stay and dry

Forget the wire, just use a 15kg leader in flurocarbon or penn10x.
You may lose the odd slug, but you'll catch more macks.
Only use wire if trolling, but not for casting slugs or beacon jigging.
For trolling livies, use a short length of wire onto a 3/0 thru the nose and a 2 or 3'o trebble stinger on wire up his arse.
This will do for both spottie and spanniards.

Re: leader material for mackeral
for casting slugs i dont use any leader what so ever.. just a 6kg double. if you wind fast enough they wont bite you off!
as has been said before light single strand wire for livies and towing lures.
when floating pillies i dont use wire- just 50lb leader. gangs arent to expensive so you can afford to lose a few sets here and there.

Re: leader material for mackeral
yea id agree with the above.some people say use 100lb mono leaders n crap, dont bother, they will cut threw 200lb mono as quick as 30lb so keep it simple.
#i use straight mono onto jigs, slugs, lures & gangs/baits & wire on livies,if GOD FORBID the macks are so thick they are slicing threw all your gear, then use wire on any of the above, but start off simple.

Re: leader material for mackeral
Jeff - I would have thought it was a little cool for lots of mackerel (even if undersize!!)
I'm with most folks here - I keep it simple - 30lb. trace (mono) to my main line (6kg) with either slugs, or bait fishing with ganged hooks and pillies. Lost a few to bite offs, but reckon with wire that I would have a lot less interested bites!! Looking foirward to a good season this year around the beacons!!

Hi Jeffo,
whereabouts on the coast are you? Might tow the boat round there and have a go at those schoolies - great fun, and great on the BBQ!!
