Soft Plastic Storage?

My tackle box is starting to get quite crowded with packs of soft plastics. I have heard that it is best to keep them in the original packaging. What does everyone else use to keep them under control? My current tackle system is getting pretty crowded and I only have half a dozen packets.
Also do you rig them on jigs before going or do it as you need them?

I used to put my sp in tackle trays but found they dried out and also lost the scent that is on most of them these days.

I am continually working to keep my tackle in order as I expand my range each week with lures and sp.

All my Soft Plastics are stored in tackle binders, there are some expensive options out there costing up to the twenty dollar mark. I use the "No Limits" tackle binders from Big W. You will find them in the backpack/school bag area and they sell for around five bucks.

The binders have a material case with a zip all the way around, inside there is 10 clear bags which have a resealable opening. I keep all my sp's in their own bags in these binders. At the moment I have four of these binders on the go, one for of sliders, one with squidgees, one with berkleys and one with spinners baits.

I keep a jighead in each individual bag as well so their ready to go when needed.

I'm with Macca I keep mine in the "no limits" binders in there original package.....For around the $5 mark there a good buy,I do have a couple of the more expensive binders as well but i do think the "no limits" ones are "bv for $"....

as most folks know.. ive got some plastics..

Currently i store them in the largest of the plano tackle trays.. ive got 6 of the large trays and 8 of the small trays absolutely packed with plastics... i carry them all in a large Bundaberg Rum duffle bag.. which is tearing at the seams.. heh.. the trays are alright.. but keep them in there packets if you can.. i went to trays because id spend 2hrs sorting through my plastics trying to find a packet im after... now im focused on using only 1 brand of plastics, i just carry a large ziplock bag around with a few packs of the plastics i want and a couple of box's of jigheads.. its a whole lot better then carrying around 14kgs of lures...

I went though the same cycle.

First I sorted them all into Plano Trays

Then waterproof Plano trays - learning that the tray is worm proof but the red seal is not – and melts when a tail gets stuck in the hinge.


Now I leave them in their original bag - which is key for Gulp! scented and etc.


I get a roll of duct tape – and add a flap to the bottom of the bag by folding the tape back on itself lengthwise. (I hope that’s a clear description)

Then I use a 2 hole punch so I can add them to my binders. The two holes need to be an odd spacing. The binders are made for USA stationery with a different space between the holes. Either punch each hole separately (you can get a single hole punch) or buy a 2 hole punch from the USA.


I can’t see the idea of a jig head in each bag. I choose different jig heads depending on flow and depth.


I keep jig heads in a Plano Guide case (2 levels) I modified this with some male Velcro strips on the bottom - so it sits on the carpet and doesn’t move.

Inside the box I lined the walls of each section with rubber strip. I don’t know what it’s called but sealing tape makes sense. It’s some sort of dense foam rubber sold by the metre – 25 mm wide, 4 mm thick. Stuck to the walls of the tackle tray I stick the jigs in - nice neat rows like little soldiers.

It stops tangles, make just the right one quick to select and if the box ever tips they stay in place (I hope)

I picked up most of these ideas from the Metcalf brothers 2002 and 2003 National Bream champions. (I got lucky and drew them as my boaters in a Bream comp)

just wondering guys, so there are no limits tackle folders available at most big W stores? are they kept in the school bag section?

I ended up getting a bunch of plastic boxes to suit 2" 3" and 4" packets and have them sorted that way. Only cost me about $10 which is much less expensive than buying brand name ones. You doen't need worm proof boxes if you keep them in the packets, thats my logic. My collection is reletively conservative compared to other members me thinks (30 packets + a dozen packets of pre mades). I keep my jig head in boxes based on hook size instead of weight. That way if i'm using a 3" plastic a can grab the box of suited jig heads then grab one thats the right weight. Any way just how ive sorted them, which is much better than before when i had them all stuffed in a plastic shopping bag.

In the original packets in a lunch box (just a regular sized one)

get 15 packets in and 3 or so boxes of nitro heads.

Only rig the lure to the head when i go to use it.

Also have a little box with individual storage slots in it for the 2nd hand lures.
