Hey has anyone had much to do with the sea**rtin type of reel ?? A friend of mines old man swears by them and I am wondering what you guys think they are an inbred "alvey spinner type'' cheers Darren

my old man has 2 of them.. if you want a no fuss reel that'll eventually stop a bull then you want a seam artin... the criss cross line laying management is unique and you dont get tangles! good for off the beach or rigged up on a reef rod and dropping.. even casting slugs if you got desperate.. they are a good all purpose reel
I have owned one of these beast for 25 years, nicknamed the thomas winch. In the earlier days when line was thicker it was good, I do find now with newer thinner lines there seems to be more line twist but this can be helped by using small ball bearing swivells. It sits in the shed at the moment with no line but it be used again one day. The only other problem I have with them is sometimes the line would get caught inbetween the stainless backing plate and reel body and I just put a small bead of silicon around it.

one of my fishing mates has used one for years off the rocks. he's a Qlder too brought up on alveys. they are simple and tough (and Australian).
I don't own one but I guess you select them if you want beach/rock reel that holds a fair bit of line, casts well and is low maintenance. A similar threadline would have you looking at the line roller bearing pretty often for rust and jamming.
my mitchell pro does a similar job and the bearing hasn't rusted yet. Must get a bit of line wear with the sea m artin (no roller just metal) but never caused my mate any problems.
some years ago a good article in modern fishing on the bloke who invented it and handmade them out of wood for years. design bought by some mob that went broke, and then revived again several years later.
Wouldn't hesitate to get one if you like it will last for years.
Well I ordered one today $140.00 so Ill see how they go. Just wanted something different from the alveyand from all comments think it will go alright. Fishing shop guy says sold 15 in 15 years and all who bought swear by them just cant convert the alvey guys to try something different.

Hi...I am wondering what the gear ratio of these reels is? I know nothing about them, but judging from the kindly supplied photo, they appear to have no bail arm as such, hence no hard wearing roller. This would rule them out for boat or cliff top fishing I am thinking, especially the latter, for winching a heavyish fish up a cliff would place too much friction on the bail 'substitute'...would I be correct in this?
