Wrong Way Overhead

I have been given a 12kg overhead rod but dont have a overhead reel to use on it. If you were to use a spinning reel on it would it damage the rod. ??? ???

Probably not, but you will not get much out of the rod - fishing rods are made with a 'backbone', which makes it stiffer to bend in a particular direction. If you bend it the opposite way to that intended, it will bend much more easily.

I would not use a rod desgned for an eggbeater with an overhead reel, as the line will rub on the rod, but I think you will be ok the other way.

As Leo_n said rods are made with a back bone, BUT some have a spiral back bone so there flexibility and strenght is in all directions not just one.

But I have to agree with Jeremy I dont think you will damage your rod if you used a
egg beater on it

I think you will find that the guide setup is different from an overhead to a spinning type rod - An overhead rod has guides closer to the blank, especially the first guide, where as a spinnning rod has guides extended from the blank - I think you will find that if you try to cast a spinning reel on an overhead rod the line will choke on the first guide, dramatically decreasing your casting distance - vice versa, if you were to cast an overhead reel on a spin stick, u will find ur accuracy dramatically decreases also, and thats not to mention the backbone as said in earlier posts
