cant u just back them with something chris.
just recieved today a set (2) of shiny heavy duty rail clamp rod holders from the US like those vertico got for his new toy.
I ordered 1 inch clamps to suit the rail. The clamps arrived - invoice says 1 inch clamps - package says 1 inch clamp but my eyes, calipers & the gap when you try to fit them says 1 1/4 inch clamps. #
I don't want another shipping charge & I've sent them a polite email asking if they can resolve the "hiccup".
Christ they are nice clamps though, I haven't seen anything of similar quality or even close - the $45 ones you can buy with only tac welds would not be close to them in strength.
Part of me thinks I might have to sell them, wadda you think ? Where do I stand? Never done this O/S buying thing before.
Stay tuned for the result...

hey rob,
i thought about that, but with 1/8 inch of backing either side it ends up being 1/4 inch of backing in total; 7mm thick - not what I paid $80 per rod holder for.
I got a response from BassPro this morning (& an interesting insight too when the first operator accidently sent her email to me instead of her manager). They will reimburse the cost of surface mail (insured) & send out the correct set without further expense to me.
I'm as happy as I could be with that response, it really wasn't their fault the manufacturer can't tick the right box.
I also want to beef-up my flush gunnel rod holders before Xmas. I remember you upgrade yours a while back but can't find the thread. What did you end up putting in the OC?
chris
got some home brand XOS ones, the cost was 50 each, easiest way to judge the quality was by the weight, must be twice the metal the cheapies have.

how did you get them in to the country USPP Surface or air I am trying to get stuff in from over there without incureing GST, you are permitted to bring goods Via Post up to $1000 gst free. But some try and send it transport to be able to track it and this wat you get hit imports & Taxes
Westie,
All US retail outlets will give you a confirmed shipping price by email before sale so you can pay for the item & shipping. If they won't use US Post Airmail but insist on FedEx or the like then find another dealer. You WILL pay 5% Duty & 10% GST if you use anyone else than US Post. FedEx, etc will also hit you up for a customs clearance fee.
The $1000 is not quite correct. Aust Post collect the GST & Duty on behalf of the ATO & Customs. They do not consider the collection of less than $50 to be cost effective therefore goods valued at less than approx $400 get in for free.
US Post will insure items & a tracking # can be accessed via the US Post website. Your US retailer will provide you with the tracking #.
I normally get the item delivered to my door in Brisbane in under 7 working days. Hope this helps.
ROLL TIDE, ROLL.................

Pipe is measured as a nominal bore i.e. 1" pipe has approximately a 1" bore size but the outside diameter is 34mm
All pipe brackets and equipment are to suit the nominal bore size not the outside diameter of the pipe which makes sense when you think about the reason why pipe was invented....pipe transports fluids or gases therfore the pipes are sized on the diameter of product flowing thru them not the outside of the pipe.
So in actual fact you ordered 1" pipe brackets and that is exactly what you got brackets for 1" pipe.......you needed 3/4" pipe brackets which measure 28mm diameter.
peterbo3 ...thanks for the info will see what I can do

I looked at the packaging on the rod holders itself & it listed the Tacomarine.com website (the manufacturer). The website for them clearly advises a look at a sizing document to gauge the correct size needed - unfortunately the Basspro website (the retailer) does not - it simply describes them as " size 1 inch", (not even to suit 1inch pipe or similar)
I should've asked vert what he got...
Thanks for the info, I do appreciate the advice - you have saved me the drama of repeating the mistake !

Chris, I checked out that site and was pretty impressed by the rodholders you got. They are far superior to anything in Aus that have seen. I always worry about the welding tacks on the ones around here. What did they cost landed?
