Lead can be bought from most scrap metal places.
making your own sinker moulds are probly more trouble than they are worth, unless making some customised shape or type.
Lead plates from a battery are not a good idea. Firstly what do you do with the acid & secondly its dangerous and thirdly I reckon more trouble than its worth.

I make a few myself, mainly snapper sinkers that normally cost about $2.00.
Have a look on EBay or your tackle shop for sinker moulds.
Go to any tyre dealer and ask them if you can have their wasted/old lead weights, they will normaly give them to you, however you can offer a few bucks for a bucket full.
Melt them down and using a kitchen thingo that's flat with holes in it, skim all the metal bits and crap out of the molten lead.
Make sure that your mold is hot for the first pour, after that it should stay hot if you keep pouring.
Good luck and have a bit of fun in the process.
mate go to a scrap metal merchant and by the lead with no forign boddies like other metals and plastic on it. The impuraties STICK when burning the sh!t off the lead. It cost about 70c-80c a kilo.
Moulds are cheap so don't waste your time making them.![]()

Totally agree with spiro just purchase you own and it will last a life time and the lead Scrap Metal yards for sheets and cut it with Tin snips while at the scrap yard pick so scrap 16,20, 25mm square section tube and if you ask the they may weld the tools below for you the Lg one I have had for 20 yrs along with my moulds also look around for a 6-8" cast pot to melt the lead in or a VERY heavy Aluminium one DO NOT LIFT the pot lead is in use the ladles to remove it
If you really want to make moulds its the same technique as making tin soldiers I used to do as a kid. You make plaster moulds.
Scrap yards and tyre dealers will have plenty of lead to suit sinkers.
If you keep your eye in the firearms section of the paper you may come up with a cheap electric lead pot which are used for cating bullets. The have a bottom pouring spout which makes life a lot easier.
To get rid of the dross from the scrap lead put a small amount of dripping into it. The crap can be scooped off the top.
A word of warning. The slightest bit of moisture will see the lead "explode". I used to heat all my bullet moulds and tools first to stop flying lead.
You should also where a mask. Lead vapours do have cumulative damaging effects.

The whole world's mad save thee & me (but I'm not too sure about thee)
Simsmetal at rocklea or Northgate will have scrap lead for prchase.
Get the cut offs of the flashing sheeting the builders discard.
50 bucks worth makes a heap of sinkers.
Forget the batteries to much work for little return.
You will only need to buy a mold to make big sinkers, to make the small ones your self is a waste of timeand it is easiest to buy them.
Making sinkers has many hazzards and you need to be aware of these before you start.
