Re: Prawnstars
when i used them the flathead couldnt stay away from them. technique is simple let it sink and flick the tip of your rod which should make the tail flick. what size did u buy?

Re: Prawnstars
Have used them before but found the tail doesn't flick too well. A couple of people have mentioned the same problem but they just trimmed the edges back a bit. Have had more luck with the hard bodied rio plastic prawn.

Re: Prawnstars
i've had good success with them. my quota has been small things. but i have caught about 6 different species on them. from flounder to cod.
just cast. let sink to desired depth then flick the rod tip up.

Re: Prawnstars
I did find that it was difficult to tie the leader off to the rear hook on the PrawnStar. It became frustrating as those damn sharp hooks would be catching on any finger that went near the lure. Once it was tied off though the action in the tail worked a treat, that said I haven't caught anything on this lure but will give it another go on the next trip.

Re: Prawnstars
Leigh,
I have had great success using Prawnstars over the past 4 years or so, they are my number one go to lure for jacks. Don't be to worried about the flicking action of the tail, in my opinion they get heaps of bites because of the way they "plane" down through the water column. We seem to get more hits & hook-ups as the "prawnie" slowly sinks through the snag. They are very snag resistant and you can certainly fish them in plenty of spots that a bibbed lure can't.
There are a couple of adjustments that you can make to the prawns to make them fish a little better. First thing is to increase the size of the first treble, this exposes the hook points a bit more and certainly increases hook-up rate. The second is to leave a fairly long tag on the end of your knot at the back treble. At least an inch maybe more. This helps prevent the knot pulling forward and jamming into the eye of the first treble and fowling the prawnie. The other tip is to try to teach yourself to physically set the hook when you feel the weight of a fish. Alot of times a fish will engulf the prawn as it sits on the bottom, as you go to give the lure another jerk you have weight, if you just try to wind the fish in most times it will drop off after a couple of seconds. It is hard to do, but the best thing is stop and give the lure a good rip to set the hooks. I was back up in Weipa earlier this year and prawnies where the stand out lure yet again.
Hope this helps.

Re: Prawnstars
I have a honeypot junior, an el natural junior and a shrimp in purple. The too junior sized lures have caught flathead, school jew, bream, trevally, tailor and small cod. The shrimp has caught bream mostly with a few flathead.
I find that the tail flicking part doesnt really work so i just give it a few flicks and then let it sink. When it is lying on the bottom i have also found that to really get a solid hit on a fish that you have to strike quite aggresively. When fishing over flats the weights inside can be totally dispensed with and they make an awesome shallow water prawn that almost glides over the flat without the weight inside.
