GO FISHING IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE
The Fisheries Conservation Technology Unit of the NSW Department of Primary Industries is looking for anglers in NSW to trial different hook designs to target yellowfin bream and mulloway.
This study is part of a two-year research project to estimate and maximize the survival of key fish released from capture by recreational anglers throughout NSW.
Participating anglers will be given specific designs of hooks and asked to complete data sheets for all of the bream and mulloway they catch.
The collected data will be used to determine the extent to which different hook types influence anatomical hook location and their catching efficiency.
If you are interested in volunteering your time to help with this important research, please contact: Dr. Paul Butcher, NSW DPI on (02) 66483910 (office hours 8-30 - 5 pm)
I could manage that for you mate.
Hi
Anyone interested can please phone me and i will be happy to ring them straight back to save you the cost of the call.
Kind regards
Paul
Why only NSW, Qld has a health supply of Bream.
I know there would be a few anglers in the Sunshine state who would jump at a chance to help.
Harry
I love the sound of reels screaming in the morning
Guys
I understand that yellowfin bream and mulloway are caught across many states in Australia.
This project is funded by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust and the NSW DPI and therefore we are currently using NSW anglers only for this component of the research.
If you interested in being involved Nationally with fishing research you can contact:
Bill Sawynok at INFOFISH on infofish@zbcom.net as they will be able to get you involved.
Thank you for your help and interest
Kind regards
Paul.
Is this only for bait fishing or are you doing jighead type hooks for plastics ??
Hi
Just using bait with the current research and we will be moving into #SP in the future. We will supply "J" and "circle" hooks with data sheets.
Cheers
Paul.
You Bloody Qld'ers think the sun really does shine brighter up there don't you ?Originally Posted by harry_h01

Nice to know some of our money is being spent and that the common fisherman is being involved in the process.
I'll be in contact Butch for the bream. As for mulloway.... if you can get me one then you will have broken my jinx with the buggers.
Regards
Alex
p.s. We won't be sharing the results with other states
If anyone is interested in our work you can view it on the NSW DPI website (http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries) plus we have had articles summarising the results in Fishing World Magazine (Feb 05, April 2005 p52, August 2005 p78) with a few more coming up in the next few months)
Cheers

Hooks and data sheets in the mail this morning.
Can you email me your phone number so i can ring you in a few days time to talk you through the data sheet.
Kind regards
Paul.
just sent you a email paul as the phone seems busy
maybe me and alex could hook up and target those jews for a week or so all in the name of resurch of course
lmao basser.
You have got to have rocks in your head thinking I could get anywhere near a jewie.
On a serious note though the season is slowing down so Jewie research data might be a bit slow coming in for you even from the guys who can catch them.
