ABU 2500 - Sounds like its going to explode

I've got an old 2500C, and whenever I cast it sounds like its going to explode. So I change the bearings (bought ADEC 5 or 7 I think), and it still sounds like its going to explode.

I went to Tackle Warehouse, and they said, yeah there like that.

Anyone else got any opinions on the 2500C.

Although I have a soft spot for the old ABUs (they wrote the book), I think even cheap Shimanos are much smoother. I haven't looked at any recent ABUs, are they any better?

    Whichway,

Something you can try to tell if its bearings is to put a spot of heavier oil on the bearings, it will cut back your casting distance but if the noise is reduced or disappears you know what it is, also check the spool end play cap for correct ajustment, if the reel has seen a lot of work it could be also be wear in the level wind gearing or worm drive.
My Ultra Cast 4600 is quite noisy when casting, but this is because I use it to flick light lures about, so the bearings only have 1 spot of very light machine oil in each one, even so I would describe the noise as a busy whine not like it is about to explode.
Just check also that your new bearings are a snug fit on the spindles and in their houseings.
    Hope the info helps

If its like my ABU 7000 it should run really well with just a drop of 85 or 90w oil on the bearing ends. Maybe the noise you are hearing is the centrifigal brake? If thats the case don't worry because it is normal. I have a 7000 35 years old and it still casts as new. Keep it clean and it will last years.
