Was wondering if anyone has one of these fish finders from humminbird , and the question is at what depth have you been out in and still picked up the bottom ?
They say it can get to 600m deep with a transom mount transducer i guess? Also to those that have 500w sounders of any brand , what depths are you reaching clearly ?
any feedback is appreciated
Craig
Hi, Hercules. Noticed you haven't had much of a response so far. So thought I might respond.
I looked at the sounders extensively about 24 months ago. They were about $1200 dollars then. Aparently all right ups then said they were the ants pants for there price. Recently Leisure marine have reduced there price quite drastically. Don't know whether this is good or bad.
Anyway when I looked at them they looked like a pretty good sounder. Can't remeber what changed my mind but I ended up buying a Furuno (really looking for that reliability and backing) LS6100, which I have been very happy with.
I think the fact that Hummingbird bought out Zercom, the company that initialy produced this range of sounders concerned me regarding warranty.
Anyway, I have not witnessed these sounders in operation mode on the water, but they do look as if they provide good definition and they do have some useful functions.
Good luck Pual
Thanks for the reply pual, I am thinking along the same lines as you as am also considering the furuno for the same reasons as you. I guess the thing that makes the Legend look attractive at the moment is as you said everyones clearing them at under half price . The furuno has the name and the price to go with it , even over seas its going to be costly.
Have you had your Furuno out to any great depths? Today i went offshore and my 300w sounder lost bottom at 185m . Would love to know where the tweed canyons start and finish
Someone once told me quality is remembered long after price is forgotten .
I think i'll wait and save my pennies untill i can get that 1kw transducer
Craig
Hercules, The deepest water I've had the Ls6100 in is 100m at Tempest.
The manual says deeper but they all do.
So sorry can't help in this regard .
What sounder is it that you have that lost contact.
Pual
Pual , the sounder i have at the moment is the humminbird wide paramount , 300w tri beam transducer . The transducer is through hull and i can bearly see fish at 100m so at the depths i was at the other day no chance
Craig
The 1kw transducer will give you more detail but it will not give you any more power your unit will still only pump out 300 watts I doubt you will penetrate any deeper water with it.To fish the depths your talking about your going to need something with a bit of punch,I have a 600 watt unit and can pick up small shows in 300 metres of water.
Agree with you Banshee, was not looking to do anything to the 300w sounder but looking at upgrading to 600w one . What sounder do you have , and is that the max depth you have got out of it?
When looking at specs for a lot of sounders even with the same watts they seem to vary in the depths that they can reach (or say they can ) I guess these tests are done in fresh water .
Craig
Just a thought, how do they test them in fresh water? I didnt think there was any bodies of fresh water deep enough to test some of these depths that are being mentioned??? I thought it was hard enough finding deep enough water offshore to get to extreme depths let alone that. lol
Matt
G'day Hercules,I've got a Furuno 582L with an airmar P66 transducer(standard 600w transom mount),I don't make the trip out to those depths often but mostly 200khz works well on one occasion I had to go with the 50khz frequency as I think the water must have been "sullied" with something, there is a great post on here some where with pictires of one of these units working in what I think was 285 fathoms (could be wrong there).
Saw that post banshee , it was 263 fathoms and it has a through hull transducer . I was out on that boat that day as are most days especially when we go wide . For my boat when i,m not on black and blue , i'm just paranoid that i get the best sounder i can afford . Though it maybe overkill do you know if you can get a 1 kw transducer for your model ? And does it make any worthwhile difference ?
Craig
They make two 1kw transducers to suit the 582 that I know of,one is a transom mount that is huge, about thiteen inches long and last time I checked (Brisbane boat show last year) cost around a thousand dollars, and one that is shoot through the hull, it is encased in rubber and costs about fourteen hundred.I have not personaly seen a 582 working through a 1kw transducer but the rep from Taylor marine assured me the difference was very noticeable, interestingly when I bought my sounder three years ago I looked into the 1kw transducer but the bloke that supplied it,a marine electronics technician, claimed it would be a waste of money,so I can't advise either way,I think I've read here somewhere that some one is using one of these with a 1kw,don't quote me but it could be Dfox?
All the 300 watters I have had out to the shelf have lost the bottom at 170-180m. I think the 600 watters like the 582 and JRC FF50 hold at 200 fathoms. Would have been good if you purchased the Legend. I run the Zercom for freshwater bass fishing and love it. Would have been good to see what depth the Deep read to.
I guess there has to be a price limit somewhere , and a grand extra for the transducer is over my limitations . Like you said banshee , not sure on the difference it would make so its hard to contemplate the cost . If the transom transducer is that long i'm sure i would find a way to snap it off
Smithy , may still get a legend if the prices continue to drop even if it only lasts till i can afford something better . Oh the decisions one has to make !!!!
Craig
Ps Smithy, are you planning any trips up to the breaksea spit in the future , as i'm keen to take my boat up for the adventure ?
We could go any given weekend depending on weather and fishing reports. Next definate is the Fraser Coast tournament on the 21 of November or whenever.
I've got a 2005 deep and it has held bottom to about 1600'. Strangely, it doesn't work so well since I cahnged from a 2 stroke to a 4 stroke.
Sounders work better in colder water (u probably knew that) and it's definitely colder down here - it's actaually snowing on the beach today, a once in twenty years event!
