    Overheads WHERE DO I START

I have always used Spinning mostly baitrunner type reels and now I want to try and use the Overheads reels. However, I have no idea where to begin, which reel and rod to buy, where are these setup mainly used e.t.c ... any help for a begginer will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Re: Overheads WHERE DO I START

I mostly fish for Tailor, Bream, Whiting and Flatty on the rocks, surf and jettys using both lures and fresh bait. On occation I go out on boat and try soft platics but mostly fished with fresh bait.
I have no idea of where, how and when overheads are used but I would like to try it out. Any input from any of you experts would be of value to me. If my main fishing style does not suit using overheads (meaning from the rocks, surf and jetties) I would like to try it where ever and whatever style where overhead is used.

    Thanks

Go and get a little abu with some 10-12 lb mono on it. there is plenty to learn about casting and spool control and the mono wil give you some chance at undoing the many tangles u\you will encounter.

    Casting is quite different
undoing tangles is a special technique.

The abu is a good place to start

Re: Overheads WHERE DO I START

I'ld suggest getting yourself an ABU 5600 or 6500 C4, nice little reel and at a really nice price ($99 around the marts).

I cant stress enough the importance of what the other guys have said about spooling it up with cheap mono to begin with. Casting can be a pain in the arse to begin with, but once you get it down it's all smooth sailing (and you WILL get it at some stage ... practice makes perfect).

Once you're comfortable with your casting abilities, only then spool it up with some quality braid. Otherwise it's a sure fire way to birdsnest $100 worth of line ...... dont worry, we've all been there too ... and you too will learn to hate low overhanging branches as much as i :\

Just remember that practice makes perfect, and dont throw in the towel just because you cant cast at first. Maybe find a friend who can help teach you if you run into any troubles.

yes abu's are good reels for the price, overheads are a very different reel to cast and getting a over run (birds nest) is easy to do when you start out.
i also agree in using some cheap mono at first, so as not to waste valuable line while learning, spool it up and get in the back yard and practice, practice, once you get past the i'm going to chuck this thing in the garbo stage . you will beging to enjoy using it.
there is another post on here about using overheads with lots of good advice so check it out as well
    cheers
