I am a new member and am going to awoonga to try for some XOS barra and would like some advise on the best lures for both trolling and casting in the sticks.
G-day Randy, Well this post wont help you with a lure selection but I was just wondering why is it when an ausfish member puts a post on asking for some advice on how to go about getting into some of the excellent fish Qld stocked dams have to offer hardly any one replys. They are after all put and take fisheries, the more that are taken out the more the stocking groups can put back in. Thats why we pay for the permits to help stock the dams for everyone. I hardly think telling someone what lure or time of day ect will lead to them decermating the local fish population in a few days. Even local fishos who think they have a dam wired will still have tough days and bugger all fish make it back to the tinny. Rivers and reef hot spots I can go along with not telling anyone as they can be hard to find and over fished very easly. Is it possible to over fish a stocked dam. We are encouraged to take the fish out so they dont get to big and start eating the new fingerlings that are released. How can you take them out if you dont know how to get them in the first place. About 5 years ago I replyed to a member giving him some info he was chasing. About 4 years later he returned the favour when I asked him for advice. His half hour conversation with me resulted in my first ever meter barra.(thanks Dave) Sure I might have nailed the fish with out his help but he saved me hours of serching around a huge dam I had never fished before and I only had 2 days to do it in. And by the posts on this site it appears I didnt slay all the MONDURAN MONSTERS cause they are still catching bigger ones now almost every week. Well I hope some one chips in to help you out bloke.
Good luck at Awonga.
Also suggest you do a search on "Awoonga" in the freshwater section.
You'll find there will be many lure types recommended but if you stick with a recognised few you will be on the right track. I was up on Awoonga over summer and a lot of people seemed to be using (with success) the silver and gold Reidys b52's and Arafuras in gold and silver bleeding mullet colour. The latter colour has been very successful for me in both salt and fresh for barra (not only in Arafura's but RMG scorpions and classics).
I'm by no means an expert (or as experienced as other guys on Ausfish) but to give you an idea my priority lures for my trip to Faust and (maybe if I get time) Awoonga in a month's time are (in no particular order):
Casting:
Silver and gold b52s
Bleeding mullet Arafura's (if mum lets me buy any more lures!!)
Olive Back/Silver Bombers 16A (trying to get close to imitating freshwater gar )
Gold colours of bomber 16As and shallow diving rmg scorpions (although the latter can be a little too bouyant)
150mm Squidgy fish (black gold and silver) using resin heads
Bill's bugs (in dark colours) for low light situations
I upgrade my hooks lures intended for casting to VMC 6X (8527) size 1 and stronger split rings (particulalry on the bombers)
Trolling:
125 and 150mm scorpions in bleeding mullet and golden green - 3m, 5m and 8m crazy deeps (to troll different depths / contours lines on points ) - I've had metre plus success on each of these colours.
Also have some shallow vipers for trolling shallower country.
Might be a little over board but i also upgrade my hooks on lures meant for trolling to VMC 9626's trebles - size 1
There are obviously other brands and colours that will also work and I will certainly be mixing and matching - keep changing lures till you find something that works!!
Hope this helps and would welcome any additions from more experienced members.
