Thread: telescopic rods---any good?

    telescopic rods---any good?

I'd appreciate some advice about these Chinese telescopic rods said to be made of 100% carbon (?)

Am looking at a 5metres+ one for drummer fishing off the rocks, this length is needed to keep the blighters out of a cave under the rock shelf we fish off.

Heavy fishing, anyone know if these rods will stand up to it?

There is a huge range of rods made in China from absolute rubbish to excellent stuff so it is a bit difficult to say.
If it says 100% carbon it is probably true.

Get the rod in hand and check how it feels and if it's stiff enough.

What are the markings (specs) on the rod?

thanks sz, they're being sold on ebay out of Brisbane, about $70 for the 5.4 metre one, not a very detailed photo provided and no markings shown.

I'm on the mid noth coast NSW so no hope of trying it first. Guess it's a case of buyer beware, just thought someone here may have first hand experience of these ebay rods. All sizes from about 3 metres up to the 5.4 metre one.

    How about the specification provided?
    Casting weight/line class/action?

Without these it is difficult to choose.

I am in China so I seee the full range in the shops.

sz, just able to make out some wording on the rod, it looks like either:-

    SUREKILLER 540 or

    SURFKILLER 540
however I could be wrong with the F and the I

CW 100/200g which I presume is the casting weight, it is in 5 sections and said to be heavy duty. 128cm when closed

Would very much appreciate any other leads you could give me.

    yes, almost 18'.

Thanks to everyone who has replied, bit of a mixed bag by the sounds of it. Am cheating a bit but I need a very long strong rod to try to beat the bigger drummer, as a fall back I've got my old 15' 6" cane rod but I'm getting a bit ancient to hold that heavy rod for too many hours at a time.

There are some pretty fair telo's around, beats me why you would make one from 100% carbon?
Problem is that a telescopic rod will break at the join points everytime, way below the strength of the carbon!!

    Waste of carbon!!

    Re: telescopic rods---any good?

I have had a telescopic rod before and I found it much weaker than the 1 or 2 piece rods. As Tony has said above, the rod will more than likely break at the joins. Personally I wouldn't touch it but thats just my opinion.

    Re: telescopic rods---any good?

I would guess that the 100/200g would be the casting weight.
This would mean a fairly stiff rod so it might do the trick.

At 70$ a piece might be worth trying.

Regarding telescopic rods in general. As I have written before there is a whole range of them and some are crap and some are pretty good price range from 10$ a piece to over a 1000$.

Big part of the world (Asia, Europe) prefers telescopic rods for various reasons (mainly small closed length), Shimano makes a ful range of telescopic surf rod for sale on South East Asian market.

I own and use a few telescopic rods and like them for the fisihing I do. Had a few of them break but never at the joint and always during handling in situations where any other rod would give as well. Closing them requires care !!!

Expensive models are made of carbon for the same reason as other rods weight and strength.

If i will find a moment I will go to the nearby shop and check if they have anything like this rod.
