Thread: rod building lathe question

    Re: rod building lathe question

thanks drew that sounds like a good set up you got. If you can get some pics that would be great. I also like the idea of the metal brackets instead of rollers should be nice and easy to knock something together.

sounds like the only thing I'm going to have trouble with getting is the chuck. what sort of chuck do you use and where do you get them?

With all the sugestions you've all given me I'm sure I'll be able to set something up for next to nothing except for the chuck I pretty much have everthing I need.

    thanks again.

working on the photo's for you brad, the chuck you can get from bunnings for next to nothing or steal one off a cheap drill it doesnt have to be very good quality.

tip... attach an old hole saw to the chuck and cover the hole with a bit of tyre tube then cut a cros in the center of the rubber so you can slide your blank into it. this holds the blank secure while spinning and binding.

To get hold of a chuck visit your local tackle store and tell them you want one, cost not sure of as I got mine wholesale while working in a shop, but L. Wilson and Exclusive tackle should be able to supple one for your shop.

surf_sniper thanks for the tips i wasn't sure how to go about using a standard size chuck but that hole saw idea should work a treat.
I'm off to the boat show tomorow night and I'm hopeing there is a rod building stand there who knows I might even be able to pick up a blank and some gear to kick off my first project. now that the lathe seems to be all under control.
    thanks again to everyone.

    Re: rod building lathe question

as you can see in the pic there is a rod spining at the moment using the edge banding motor ( this one doesnt have it's cover on it )

the binding motor ( singer sewing machine motor is on the arm beside the spining motor. it can flip down and line up with the smame rollers meaning the lathe can be used for spining and binding.

the switch on the lower left is a light dimmer switch. it allows us to vary the speed of the binding motor so that it does not spin to fast. there is also a foot peadal that controls the speed as well. this meaning i can control the max speed of the highest setting of the foot pedal. works a treat.

bench is covered in rubber to help keep it clean and mess free.

    Re: rod building lathe question

we run two benches so one rod can be resining while another is being bound, this is the second bench and we use y type metal bracket with a little rubber on them, they work just as good as rollers if not better.

    very simple to make

    Re: rod building lathe question

the same induction motor sits down the other end of the second bench in a pine box. i modified a air intake grill off my landrover onto the side of the box to feed cool air to the fan that cool it ..... landrovers are extremly versatile

    Re: rod building lathe question

this is what we use to sit our binding on when binding up a rod. simply sit the spool on it and move it alon the bench with you as needed.
