Took my shiny new TSS4 out for its first spin this wekend. Great reel, it can really make a slug fly.
One thing I'm not sure about. If the reel is set up to wait for a run, the drag seems to tighten itself when a run happens. Is this normal? I can see how this could be a problem if you want to let the fish run a bit.
probably shouldn't do that, unless the fish is taking a heck of a lot of line.. the drag will become heavier as the fish takes line. in most cases the fish doesn't take enough to be a problem, but when you do get that monster you need to back the drag off a bit as the line gets less on the spool, remember to reset it when the spool is filled again, clear as mud..
What is happening on this reel is that when you pull on the line to test the drag setting, the drag is tightening up in about 20cm of line pulled out... I've seen this happen on another reel a while ago, and the reel was stuffed! (Lost a good jewie because of the thing )
This is a brand new reel, and I don't think it should be doing that....
I agree with Jeremy, it sounds like the spool is catching on the drag knob and tightening it. Should not do that. Maybe double check to make shure there's no debris between the drag knob and the spool making it catch. Are any of the csrews holding the waterproof drag bit down not screwed in all the way? If not, take it back. Muz.
Sounds to me like the drag washers are in the wrong order,the last plate in the stack under the drag knob should be locked onto the shaft,not into the spool.
I had a good look at the whole drag system. Turns out the answer was "none of the above" [smiley=huh2.gif]
The drag knob passes through a waterproofing seal before it comes into contact with the drag plates. Because the seal is brand new, it is still a bit sticky and catches the knob as the reel spins.
One drop of silicone lube and presto! working TSS4.
