Thread: What line when spinning for macs?

What line when spinning for macs?

I'm thinking about getting a TSS4 for chasing macs/tuna, just need to know what size braid to go for? Also any ideas on the best way to set up the line for the same purpose, ie. braid/swivel/leader/slug, braid/leader/slug, braid/slug? Also leader strength? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to get a few this summer unlike last summer where I could hook em up but not boat em.
    Cheers,

    Peter.

Sorry, one more - I've got a Baitrunner 4500, is the TSS4 significantly better for spinning slugs?

TSS4 is brilliant for spinning 4kg line try to ensure you run full rod lenght of quality 30lb leader tied direct to the braid DO NOT USE a swivel and be prepared to replace line often or cut all knots after fishing and tow the line around for a while to smoothe out and unwind some of the twist. Best weight slug I have found has been the 40g but you do not specify what weight / length rod you will be useing.

Sorry, forgot to mention the rod. It'll go on an ugly stick platinum 8ft, 6-8.5kg.

    Pwoida,

Running that length rod you can afford to drop the leader length slightly say 6ft as the rod will have a good shock absorber effect. Hope this helps you to get amongst them

Check my post finally got the pics from other day. All these were taken on same outfit except 6ft6in ugly stick

    Pwoida,

using braid might have been part of the problem if you were hooking fish but not landing them. The stretch in the mono helps keep the line tight on a fish and avoid the fish dropping the lure or you pulling it out from too much pressure.

I would suggest 6 kg mono as a good allround line for spinning pelagics, from mack tuna to school and spotty mackerel. Would be capable of landing a longtail tuna or spaniard also. But 4 kg line or even less is plenty capable of landing spotties and school mackerel in the bay.

    Jeremy,

So you're saying a full spool of mono (flurocarbon?) with the slug tied directly on?

    pwoida,

4kg pretest mono with 30lb flurocarbon will catch and land

    17Kg Diamond Trevally
    14.8kg Giant Trevally
    14.4kg Northern Blue Fin Tuna
    14.2kg Golden Trevally
    13.8kg Cobia
    12.8kg Gold Spot Trevally
    7kg Yellofin Tuna

I would have to dig out my records to continue but I am sure you get the picture..

Not fluorocarbon, just regular (or pretest) mono. With 6 kg line and average size fish, you would get away tying the slug directly to the line, but for anything lighter I would suggest using a heavier leader of say 20-30 lb line. Tying the slug directly to the main line simplifies the whole deal and avoids additional knots which are usually the weak point.
