I have an old Abu Cardinal 759. Does anyone still use this reel or know anything about it? It looks like it could be a high speed type reel which might be good for pelagics.
I've had a 759 for almost 20 years and found it to be to be an excellent reel in most respects for my use (beach and rock), but there's a few things to keep an eye on. The bail roller runs on a nylon sleeve and needs regular maintenance to keep it rolling (like most bail rollers) - wash it in hot water to dissolve any salt build up after use and take it apart and clean out any build up if the roller starts jamming. I've tried all sorts of lubricant in there but nothing seems to work for long with the salt water washing it off.
The rear drag is not sealed so sand can get into the thread and cause problems if used in the surf and corrosion can take place inside the drag parts.
The reel could be used for pelagics but I reckon the bail roller wouldn't cope too well on the larger, faster fish. I've attached my schematic for your info
Cheers Dodgemeister,
Thanks for the schematic, I've had a look inside and it looks pretty well cared for, but I think I'll still pull it apart for closer inspection.
I need a high speed spinning reel and was going to buy a TSS4, but looking at this 759 I was wondering if it would come close to doing the same job. I'm a bit dumb when it comes to gear ratios etc, the 759 is 1:4.2 & I don't know how this compares with the TSS4. It'd be nice to save some money but am I dreaming?
