Can I have some comments please on the smooth nets. On tele and dvds they push enviro nets and I wandered into a tackle store on Old Cleveland Road and thought they were quite dear.
Yesterday at the gem, there was two imitation types shakespeare and a no name. They all look pretty similar.
We release a lot of fish now, and want to do the right thing as much as possible. This weekend, we didn't keep any flatheads, personally I don't like them that much to eat, but love catching them on the trebles with the barbs squashed, especially when they jump and carry on.
Are the enviro nets worth the cost? If so, why.
Thanks
i found the enviro net hard to manourve in water due to it not draining water. like dragging a bag though water.i sold mine and bought a "protector" net which is made from a heavy duty material like shade cloth.
cheers

We use one of the Shakespeare nets, they are really worth the money. Not only don't you get any annoying hook ups in them, but the flatties don't get tangled and you don't damage the fish by knocking off scales or removing their slime coat like you do with the normal nets.
Like you said it is very hard to scoop a fish into the net due to the extra water resistance, but all you do is put the net into the water and "swim" the fish into the net, couldn't be simpler.
I have a Enviro net and find it very good. As John swaid swim the fish into the net, simple. They are a bit expensive but when I got mine that was the only one like it they had and I did not want another one of those annoying net type of ones.
Jarvis Walker sell a copy called the Eco net, which are quite cheap and well made.
There are 2 types.....half mesh, which has part of the net in vinyl.
Or the full mesh which is all shade mesh material.
The full mesh is easier to manouvre thru the water, but as JT say's you just swim the fish in.
They save heaps of damage to your fish, stops the tail and fins from getting split, saves slime coating etc. And your lures dont get stuck in the net.
I have a barra size enviro net. There great. They have a strap system that you pull up along the length of the handle which keeps the 'pocket' of the net tight. The idea then is to spear the net down infront of the fish whilest the angler swims the fish into it.
Thanks everyone
Will look for the 'barra' one this weekend, otherwise, It will be the shakespeare I think.
Either way, it will be good to have one on board I think.
Cheers
