    Fly And Normal Fishing Differences

i have fished w/ bait and soft plastics but what i'd like to know is what is the differences between fly fishing and normal fishing? besides the different type of bait.

    HI tempest,
Ive done a bit of fly, but IM no expert.

The first diff is its harder, so many go from bait, to SP, to fly as a progression. Its nice to be able to decieve a fish with fly. A more pure form of fishing.

The next thing I noticed was the diff depths. Most fly starts out with a floating line, then there is intermediate and sinking lines.

Saltwater fly is really taking off in qld. I like the big rods, like the double handed spey rods.

I would have thought the most obvious difference is in the casting techniques used for fly, as it is the weight of the line alone that allows you to cast a good distance. No sinkers, just a wee fly on the end, for dry fly fishing anyway.

The ability to softly land a fly on the water surface must be pretty tricky. I havent done it but Ive seen it done and a mate of mine is right into it.

As for wet fly I dont know....actually I better shut up now Im getting in over my head already.....

I think one of the major diferences is that because you don't need (or want) weight in the fly for casting it, you can make the fly a much more accurate copy of whatever you are trying to emulate.

With other lures (like soft plastics and hard bodies) you are resticted by the casting technique because you need weight to cast.

Yeh ....what they said ...Huge differences really ...where do you start ....The line , how it is used is really the big differnce ...it throws the lure , rather then the lure pulling the line ...it is the line that plays the most vital part in lure presentation ..

It can definately be more effective on surface feeders that are chewin small baits , but harder to get into em .
I have had a bit of fun with the wand ....mack tuna , bonito , Big Salmon ...i found it works brilliantly for dollies around the wave riders too . the wand is coming out this weekend looking for tuna actually .

a lot harder on the arms after a whole though ...and big hands SUCK when winding those little buggers

Don't know wnough to really point it out without sounding like a twat ....but yeh ....definately a bit of fun with the surface feeders

Re: Fly And Normal Fishing Differences

After learning to cast fly (which took 3 mths) I had to ask myself why am I doing this? I decided that I chase certain species of fish based on what I like to eat, not for the sport. So then I looked at the most effective methods of catching target species. I ended up going back to live bait as first choice and frozen bait as second choice.

To fly, or not, seems to depend on why do you fish?
