Re: daiwa saltist overhead?
Quality is A1. Next best thing to a Saltiga. Check out - http://www.##################.com/ and click on 'reels'. Have fun !! The Saltist 40 is -
Code Product Price Control
re01-124 Daiwa Saltist 40 & 40H $279 40 (4.9 to 1) 40H (6.4 to 1)
Two models:
40 4.9:1 gear ratio.
40H 6.4:1 gear ratio
Tournament reel at a very affordable price. Get all the great features that are included with Saltiga reels. Power packed drags.
Aluminium one piece frame and side plates.
Infinite anti-reverse
Machined aluminium spool
Ratchet alarm
Centrfugal anti-backlash control
Line capacity: 320m 10kg, 200m 15kg or plenty of braid.
Gear ratio: 4.9 to 1.
Ball bearings: 3 CRBB
Weight: 670 grams
Depending on the brand of braid, I would guess around 350m of 60lb to 80lb.

Re: daiwa saltist overhead?
In my opinion they are the pick of anything in that price range for jigging, compared to a Torium they seem to be more robust, drag is around 12kg's and they will cast extremely well(if you want some versatility),you will get 300 metres of 80lbs colour coded braid(Sunline/Siglon Tecneed or Daiwa Sensor 8) plus a 5 metre leader of 150lbs Jinkai on the 40(just) and there should be a high speed version out now(6.4 to 1).

Re: daiwa saltist overhead?
Is the 6.4:1 better for casting?

Re: daiwa saltist overhead?
The gear ratio has no bearing on the castability, both models will cast the same if set up identicaly.

Re: daiwa saltist overhead?
I guess I should clairfy - is the 6.4:1 model better for retrieval?
Woudl the difference be significant (6.4:1 to 4.9:1) when retieving light lures?
Also, will the smaller 30 be better for casting than the 40/50 - ergonomic wise?

Re: daiwa saltist overhead?
Will 4.9:1 40H suffice for spinning lures off boat?

Re: daiwa saltist overhead?
I have a 40H as well. I can only speak from a bottom-bashing perspective, but I have had my reel for 2.5 years and used it countless times. I cannot fault it one bit, they are tough as nails and worth every cent IMO. You can't go wrong buying one of these reels. When I bought it I was loooking at the Torium (I have always had Shimano in the past) The salesman told me the Saltist was better by a mile. Going to an independent dealer that sells a wide range of brands is bettter as they will give you an honest opinion on each reel. The I use dealer has a mate who independently tests every reel (lucky bloke) that comes onto the market and you would be surprised with his findings. Hope this helps

Re: daiwa saltist overhead?
I used to cast with it, and it casts very well! but I have now put braid on it and use it for jigging. If you are going to cast with it dont put braid on it use mono. All big overheads cast better with mono, braid cuts in too much.

Thansk Budd.
What is the briad like for jigging?
I have read many conflicting arguments on this fourm for/against using briad.
your opinions on using braid and not mono?

Re: daiwa saltist overhead?
Mate im using a 50h for spinning lures and can cast about 100-150m on a good day with a 60g metal.
What are you fishing for? Im using 15 kilo mono on mine as I bought it to mostly spin for longtail tuna off the rocks and needed the added line capacity of the 50 sized model.
If you are using it for spinning go about 10kg or 8kg mono as they will handle most fish you are likely to encounter. When using braid for casting ont he larger overheads ive found them to be near impossible to pull a birdsnest out of once the braid digs in.
Ill be using mine for bottom bashing also in the near future so ill let you know how it goes on the big blue!

Re: daiwa saltist overhead?
THanks Mat.
I'll be using the 40H in the boat for 99% of it's life.
60% of this time casting from boat for any big palegic that's wants to strike.
30% of time maybe jigging and 10% for bottom bashing.
Location - off GOVE NT.
Good to hear you can throw that weight with relatively light line. I was planning on puttiin gbraid on it but after reading yours and few other posts, I will most likely put mono - what ib breaking strain do u recommend for my applciation?
