I got one of these given to me by my Father in Law. It's never been used, it's not on a rod, and I'm wondering what the hell do I do with this thing.
Those that know me, I'm no fishing guru, and haven't been doing it for long, so I have never seen these used before. Is it meant to go onto a rod, or does it go onto a bracket on the side of the boat or what.
I'm thinking about making a bracket up for it and using it as a downrigger.
Besides all the answers that are going to say, "Throw it away", or "Give it to me", what are these used for and how are they meant to be rigged?
There's an Alvey 725 C52 reel which is 7" in diameter and holds 630 metres of 23 kilo line. It weighs 1.38kg. There's also an Alvey 925C52 reel which is 9" in diameter and holds 800 metres of 23 kilo line and weighs 1.75kg. Both reels are the non casting type and are star drags. Alvey recommend a rod of 2 to 2.5 metres.

Get used to using it and you may never go back to anything else for deep reef fishing . You can't cast it - just put it in freespool and the lead runs it out to the bottom . Load some 50 lb braid on it with a mono shock leader and try it . It will handle any fish the overheads will . Love my ones . Not suitable for floaters though - mainly bottom bouncing . Lots of guys troll with them so they are very versatile .
Had a look at a few things, it is the 925C52. I've got a spare rod downstairs that I haven't used yet, so I loaded it up with 500m of 50lb platypus mono that I had laying around.
I'll take it to Agnes and give it a shot there. Bloody heavy though, might have to get a rod bucket. Maybe I could be like Brett and be 'Just trying it on' and get an unforgettable catch.
