just picked up a japanese stella fw2500s (thanks raef )and was wondering what the difference is between it and the saltwater versions and what sort of risk i would be running using it in the salt. will a freshwater flush and a wipe with inox save me or should i keep it for the sweetwater exclusively.
The biggest concern is magnesium components. Unprotected magnesium corodes porously ie the same way iron does except at a dramatically accelerated rate. For this reason it is treated but is normally only suitable for fresh water use. Some heavy duty game reels now have a magnesium body but have a special surface coating preventing corrosion. Flushing reels with fresh water often pushes salt into the body. Hosing down reels is not recommended by manufacturers and even says so in most instruction manuals.
