When I read the first couple of posts, I thought I would put up a post agreeing with Jeremy. But then Foxy more than covered it.
Scott, I currently have a 7' ugly with my tss4 and it is a great match... for bait fishing.
Not so good for palagics. I just do not get the distance. On the shopping list is yet another rod for the up coming season as I definately need more distance with slugs. (graphite is the go for casting)

is this the type of bait fish you are talking about scott landed this on a ugly stick gold 6.8 kilo i think it went 10 kilo so i think the rod is up for the job
if that mac tuna is 10kg... ill.... umm... eat.. my hat! lol.. looks about 6-7kg size.. as for the rod... well.. theres no doubt.. that 8kg can handle solid fish, aslong as you use the gear properly, theres no stopping you..
Tho if your serious, you'd be better off spending a few more quid and getting a quality made graphite rod designed for lure work. mainly soft plastics and such, match it upto something like a stradic 6000 and you'd have a sure fire gun spin outfit.. lotsa fun too! something like a St Croix rod and stradic

Foxy is spot on here.We come across this almost everyday at this time of year and while the clear tip type rods will do a job on a budget you will most certainly catch more fish in the bay with quality gear.
The extra cast distance will get you closer to the fish when they are spooky and without doubt the fish handling ability of graphite/composite rods will improve the hook up/capture rate.
We sell rods for the purpose in every budget everyday but the people who go to the extra expense of better gear are happier with the purchase in almost every instance.

Im not dissing the full graphite spin rods at all. I do think there a much better rod than the glass ones, and i was very close to gettin one just the other day. Only suggesting that the ugly sticks are a nice cheap option and will do the job but do agree that they could have a bit more grunt in them.
Cheech, with the 8 foot rod i can cast a slug a mile!
Dazza - Just a word of warning on the Live fibres. I bought a 8ft 8-10 kg Wilson about a year ago and had to return it because the guides did not line up with the reel seat. the repacement rod wasn't 100% aligned as well. They must have had some quality control probs in the factory at the time. Just make sure that you put a reel on the rod in the tackle shop and eyeball the alignment before you purchase.
A nice fast reel to link with the rod is a Daiwa Emblem Pro 5500 - casts 45-60 grams a country mile with 20lb fireline. But we are probably now out of the original price bracket.

Just to get off the topic of the rod for a bit, I went into a shop the other day and had a look at the tss4 there and found it to be really clunky. I am not really into eggbeater styles of reel, but have been considdering investing in one for just this purpose (casting slugs). The tss4 that I played around with didn't seem very smooth or balanced to me. I was playing around with some of the Okuma reels of a similar size and smaller Shimano reels and and they all seemed a lot smoother and more balanced to me. Anyone else found this or did I just come across a dud of a tss4???
The problem is how do you tell the other half you just laid down half a weeks income on yet ANOTHER rod and reel?

Leo - the TSS4s are not the smoothest of reels but they are tough as nails. For sure there are smoother reels but for the $$s they are the are imo the best buy.
Ask Heath what he thinks of Okuma Spinning reels
Jon - reels are the cheapest part of fishing - get a boat then you will really wonder where youre money goes but you do pick up a diploma in creative story-telling

The mackmaulers will cast a mile with cheapie rods, very aerodynamic, if you are going for a cheapie rod like an ugly though get one around 8ft not 7, should get you an extra 10-15m cast.

Leo. I had the same thoughts when I bought my tss4, bit when you accept what they are and what they are trying to be, they are a great reel. Be patient and you will grow to love it for what it is.
