find the yabbie holes and place the pump directly over the hole and suck, do this in the same hole until the sharft of the pump reaches about 3/4 of the way down the pump. If it feels to hard to pump or not pumping much there is a wing nut on the end of the pump that can be altered to fix the problem. Nothing to it, you'll soon get the idea as your go along, happy pumping.

    Re: yabbie pump

    Hi Bigsiva,
Scotty's given you the drum but on the technical side here's what I do that may help although everyone eventually develops their own style.
1.Stand astride the holes you wish to pump, feet apart 18''or so to stop your feet caving in the holes.
2.After placing pump over fresh yabby holes, insert pump, pushing the end into the sand as you draw up, until the pump is full of sand, or the handle cannot extend any further.(this requires a bit of practice getting the timing right)
2.Move the pump to the side and push out the sand by pushing the handle down. This should remove a core of sand, and make it easier for the next pump.
3.Insert the pump 1/2-2/3 down the hole you have just made or until you feel you are drawing up water, making sure the handle is down fully. Draw up the handle, withdraw the pump again and squirt to one side of the hole.(this should be mainly slushy water)
    4. Repeat this 2-3 more times, going further into the hole and extracting more slushy water and sand each time.
    5. By this time you should have a few yabbies at least. I usually don't have more than 6 pumps at each hole. I figure if I havn't got any by then there's none there.
Once you get the technique right you can improve on your speed as the faster you can pump the hole usually yields better results. You also become more economical with your pumping and keep your pump movement from hole to extraction and pump out to a minimum distance.
After a while you'll be able to tell after the first pump if the sand is pumpable and holds yabbies.
    Hope that helps
