Re: Bali Fishing Tackle
i searched everywhere for tackle when i was there and only found some pretty cheap inferior quality tackle, i mean this stuff was cheap crap - bali is good shopping for t-shirts, cheap copies of designer labels, shoes etc. but not for tackle. The fishing can be hard work also, if u can get yourself a charter to take u between nusa dua and lombok island or lembongan there is definately some reasonable pelagic fishing, we got some dogtooth tuna on a research trip there last year- Bali is a great place, and I reccomend a seafood dinner on the beach at sunset in Jimbaran bay, and another night dinner at Bumbu Bali Nusa dua - this is the best restaurant in bali, very reasonably priced with fantastic entertainment and excellent service. I suggest you get away from Kuta and explore a bit- Bali is a very safe place, with the exception of a few stray dogs and the odd terrorist attack, I'd go back tommorow if I could.

Re: Bali Fishing Tackle
The tackle I have seen there in the shops was noth woth buying either cr@p or much overpriced.
As fishing goes there are charters but there is also another way of doing it.
Some of the locals can take you fishing in their boats and quite a few of them know what are they doing.
I used to go with a pair of brothers living just outside of the Holiday Inn towards Kuta.
Paid something like 30U$ per half day.
Mainly trolling Rapalas, ocassionally stopping to cast a few slugs, they also know the spots for bottom bashing as well.
It's worth bringing your own gear and giving it a go.

Re: Bali Fishing Tackle
Went there a few years ago and didn't see much fishing gear or electronics, mainly just clothes, carvings, etc.
Just concentrate on the beer and food and you should have a good time. It's so cheap you feel like a criminal.

I did catch quite a few barracudas, trevallys, tuna etc.
One of the nice things is if you bring the fish to the restaurant they will clean and cook it for you for a very small fee.

Re: Bali Fishing Tackle
thanks all,
will definitly have a think about taking my own tackle and scouting around for someone to take me fishing when over there...after all there is only so much shopping a man can take. will also be adding the stray dogs to the list of things to watch out for such as terrorists, hawkers and apparently angry monkeys

Re: Bali Fishing Tackle
I have just come back from a surf trip in Indonesia 10 days on a yacth surfing and fishing #, I took all my own gear with some good advice from mates that have been there...long story short don't get your hopes up on catching lots of fish ...the Indos have absouletly smashed there fishery they fish with dynamite and çyanide......I was surfing on isloated islands 160 miles from the mainland and it is a very sad story . The yacth we were on only did 6 to 7 knots we trolled for 10 days between islands and caught 4 fish.
We saw them one day using the cyanide they wear wet shirt material over there entire body so the cyanide doesn't get into ther skin.
I have attached a pic of these guys using cyanide catching fish for aquariums because thats all thats left. So many of these boats must go down travelling out to these isolated islands.
They free dive down and squirt the cyanide out of a little bottle around the coral head all the fish float to the surface paralyised then they collect them and they come good in there live bait tanks , they are then sold to only die a month or so later in someones aquarium , the real damage is to the reef as the cyanide kills everything it touches......destroyed for ever......so sad..
We did manage to pick up a few more fish (trevally ect) trolling from the tender but it was hard work in the blistering heat.
If you want more info drop me line robpire@pirie.net.au

Re: Bali Fishing Tackle
LOl of course there is no fish around most of indonesia, my cousin is actually working for the navy on a ship that patrols the fishing border up the north of Australia, they catch almost 1 or more boats a day from indonesia harvesting our reefs. The boat he works on had a story on 60 mins last week. The indo's have completely destroyed their fishing industry so now they are destroying ours.
