tying on a lure

Hi all,

Ive been reading the chat boards with interest for sometime and have finally decided to register and ask a few of my own questions.

What is the best knot for attaching lures to leader?

Im persevering with SPs, though having limited success, also like to troll and cast minnows and cast slices...

The general advice when lure fishing seems to be to keep trying different lures until finding one that the fish are biting...changing lures (for me) is a slow process, which gradually shortens my leader...meaning I eventually have to change that too, despite possibly not even having a hit.

Maybe Im doing it wrong...what do you do?

For SP jigs I tie a uni knot tight to the jig head. For HB's you can use a small clip to make changes easy. Or this knot is easy to tie.

I use the Uni Knot for nearly everything, but with the minnow type lures I first put half a granny (whatever you call that) then thread the line through the eye of the lure. Tie the Uni knot above the half granny and you will have a loop between the eye and the knot. This allows the lure to swim easier (apparently)

I know a few blokes who just tie a Uni knot, but don't pull it down tight, they leave a bit of loop and when the fish hits, the Uni pulls tight and away you go!
I might start using this way to leave out that half granny I put in.

If you're just experimenting with your lures, trying to find whats good for what, just stick to snap clips for now and then when you wanna target specific fish etc learn the loop knot, takes a couple of practices and youv got it down pat anyway, but i like the clips most because it takes 3 seconds to change a lure.
