braid overloading reel capacity

am nebie from FNQ taught that rod, reel, line & tackle must be matched (weakest link principle) so am puzzled by numerous posts that seemingly indicate many ausfishers are loading braids well in excess of reel capacity

have seen first hand 8-15 kg reels smoked by large fish pulling "30-50lb" braid (why cant we all talk the same language?) ... gears shredded & good fish lost + have heard of many other stories

in SEQ it doesnt seem to rate much of a mention - how can one expect to hold a large fish on a line with bugger all stretch that is rated to 50% or more over reel capacity - particularly if drags are set to line strength rather than reel strength???

Just because you use 50lb braid doesn't necessarily mean that you fish it to its limits or to the reels limits, people use braid for different reasons and low or no streach is what I'm after when I use it. In deep water it allows you to feel every bite and have little belly in the line, same deal using 4lb fireline (about strength of 12lb mono) with plastics, direct contact with fish. You have to learn how to fish with it. As far as stories about blowing up reels, heard plenty but met bugger all although it does happen.

A reel gennerates x amount of drag,no matter how heavy the braid is it will not increase the drag that reel can generate,those reels probably would have self destructed regardless of the line class.I would have to agree that there would be little to be gained from using a heavier braid,the only thing I can think of would be less line cuts at the end of the day from strikeing and feeding line back on.
