I honestly don't know what it is with some tackle shops these days.
I had a trip to Cairns a few weeks back & had a bit of a project going for my Shimano TSS3. Basically wanted to fit a BTR4500 ally spool on it. Bigger better drag is what I was after. But the shafts on the 2 spools were different sizes. The BTR4500 spool had smaller holes in the metal drag washers so the TSS3 shaft would not go through.
The plan was to visit the infamous shop in Cairns for all things to do with drags and get a new set made with a larger hole to fit the TSS3. The attendant didn't want to know about it. Made all sorts of excuses as to why it couldn't be done. So I knew I wasn't going to get anywhere with him, so we just left dissapointed.
So last weekend I pull the drag washers out & get the smallest file I could fine & after 15mins the spool that would not fit is now sitting on the reel. The other cok n bull story the guy fed me was that the line would not spool up even on the spool [smiley=dunce.gif], so I load the spool up & it winds on more even than the original spool.
Know I know how easy it is, my other older Shimano reels including my TSS4 are now going to be adorned with new spools with the better drags in the near future. As tackle shops make it harder for us, we just find an easier way to do things. Same goes for spare parts, I just order direct from the manufacturer, can't be bothered getting the run around from some of the tackle shops.
The centre hole was the hard bit. They are elongated (sp?) with flat sides & round ends. Luckly I had an old file from a tin soldier set when I was a kid & used that to make the hole bigger. If it was just round it would have been very easy.
I have an old Dam spinning reel which is a littel ripper and I dropped the metal drag washer for it overboard. I contacted Jack Erskine to make me a replacement and he said it would cost way too much and just wasn't worth it. How can I go about fashioning my own washer? It needs to be 35mm from memory with an 8mm hole, its a massive drag for such a small reel!!
Engineering companies often have boxes full of assorted spacers, washers, etc. Best best would be to ask around, failing that they could prolly turn you one up outta stainless, you'd need to spend a while polishing it or they'd charge you too much. Most places would give you a free quote if you asked. Just make sure you have accurate measurements.
Yeah Mate
Don't muck around with the Baitrunner spool for the TSS4 .Go for the jugular and stick a Stella spool on
Had a play with Heaths new conversion job and feels Great [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
rodger that ... had a feeling. I found "the guy" himself to be extremely helpful and entertaining to the petty demands of us fisherman. Bad luck, must have got him when he was out fishin
Ordered a couplea new drag assy's for my calcutta's a week or two back. Happy to pay the 10 bucks or so it listed on the site, while i'm at it, may as well get some flash grease.
Got a total, all peachy, got the goods nearly two weeks later , was shocked and dissapointed to see the invoice 20% dearer then the qoute.
WTF
Seems they added GST to the price , added postage, and even put GST on the postage
Oh well, good products anyway
maybe he thought you where just a cheap a$$ and should buy a stella or saltiga in that size.
their main operation is calibrating drag ranges on lever drag reels to match line classes for serious line class anglers....whom are trying to break world records and fish a line class to it's absolute limits.
jack erskine's reel engineering can do anything with a fish reel- but whether or not its financially viable for them without being a ridiculous charge to you is hard to see at the tendering/pricing stage of works, they simple saw no value in doing such work to such a cheap quality reel, i would suspect.
a sustain or stradic in 4000 or 6000 would be a far superior reel to your mod-ed tss3 any how, and when the gears eventually wear out you will find no replacement parts available anywhere and your tss3 will hit the skip..........
erskines make great hi-performance drag washers for a wide range of "off the shelf reels" and jack himself is a lovely old stick.
when all that is left is cheap chinese crap, maybe then you welfare cases will be happy!lol,WTF
it's good to see it motivated you to do your own job on it heath, lets hope a spanyid strips the gears this summer.
damon- duzzbe dunya'
I'm sure Jack is a nice fella, have heard many stories about the man.
If wasn't financially viable, I would have much rather they came out & just said it.
Who cares about a sustain or Stradic, your talking oranges & apples, my issue was wanting a drag fixed up on my TSS3, so I went to a place that does just that.
If wanted a Sustain, Stradic or even a Stella I would have just bought one.
But now knowing how easy it is, I'll be doing it for other reels as well.
