    always read the instructions

hi guys i just purchased myself a TLD 25 and a live fibre 15-24kg stroker rod with roller tip, after i removed the reel from the box and attached it to the rod i put some line on it and started playing with the drag, after playing with it i decided maybe i should read the instructions....

    then i read this

WARNING: Always make changes to the pre-programming knob with the lever in "FREE" because turning the pre-programming knob with the lever in strike may damage the reel.

and then i realised that i have been playing with the drag with the lever in the strike position,I wish i had of read the instructions before playing with the reel and i hope i havent damaged it...

    cheers tim

Seems strange to me...how do you change the drag when fighting a fish????

    Re: always read the instructions

You change the drag when fighting a fish using the lever... From free-spool, thru Strike, to Max Drag.

The knob Tim is talking about is the pre-set knob in the middle of the lever. According to Shimano you should back off the lever (to free spool) before turning the pre-set knob and then move the lever back up and re-test. This is normally done before fishing to set the strike and/or max drag settings (using scales etc). You wouldn't normally mess with the knob while fishing. In fact once set, you shouldn't need to re-adjust until the reel gets serviced. I think it's just to save stripping the fine threads inside the knob when high drag settings a being dialled in.

Having said all that, a mate of mine didn't read the instructions either and has been fiddling with the pre-set while the lever was at Strike without any ill effects.

You'll be right Tim, just don't do it again

    Tim,

The reason the manual states to pre-dail the drag is for two reasons.

Firstly it is alot easier to do when there is no pressure on the drag washers.
Secondly for the reason Cruiser mantioned ,you can damage the pre set knob if you are trying to dial in heavy drag pressures. You would need to have to grab the knob with a pair of pliers to do so however.

There is little chance you have damaged the reel.

i felt for you mate, there's no worse feeling than when you've happily been playing with your new toy only to read the manual later and have what ever you were doing outlined in red with cross bones as the one thing you shouldn't be doing.

If you have a #####, you dont need instructions - same as not needing a road map. We are tuned to be able to just do.

And Im pretty sure womn came up with the idea of instructions anyway....

I got my new TLD20 and read the manual, noting not to turn the knob unless in freespool. Maybe that is how I buggered the Silstar lever drag?

Got new TLD20 on Wednesday played with it, as you do.
Read manual today, had the same sinking feeling.
Hasn't even seen the water yet.

Will always read manual first from now on...

Many years ago I bought myself a yeaala terra racing head for the mighty holden six cylinder. Rushed straight in to fit it, mucked around for ages, just would not go right, so dragged out the instructions, first line on instructions read
"Now you have buggered it up, please read the instructions...."
I have always read the instructions first since then!

    Feral

What a classic mate. I always resort to the instructions after spending hours trying to work out how to do it. Even then I go straight to the back page first.

    Re: always read the instructions

the main reason for that advice is the adjuster "knob" is threaded into a plastic sort of stuff, not metal, and extra force can strip the thread on the side plate
