    Stuck... rod

Posting on behalf of a mate

after pitching in to buy him a new 2 piece rod for his b'day the brightspark lubricated (read: spat) the rubber tip that joins to the top half of the rod.. now instead of lubricating it has had the opposite effect.. and the rod is well and truly stuck together as one.. we have all had a go and trying to get it apart but its obviously not working

I have though of maybe trying some heat of some sort or wd40 but haven't given it a go yet, thought I would check here to see if anyone has some advice or someone who may have done the same thing.. how can we get it apart? Its a fairly long rod so is a PITA

    Cheers
    Az

    Re: Stuck... rod

A bit of WD4O sprayed, rod set so it can leak down into the joint, wait half an hour or so and try again.
If this doesn't help try using an air dryer to heat the outside and give it another go.

One good trick to avoid such things is to put a bit of candle wax (just rubbing with a candle) on the joints.

    Re: Stuck... rod

I have unstuck rods (NOT from the same cause) by gently using vice grips with a thin pice of plastic (eg a polythene bag) or rubber, over the jaws, on both parts.....twist in opposite directions.

The lubricant will have swelled the neoprene joint, so if the above doesn't work, he's got a long rod.

    Heya Az

You have had two pretty good suggestion there, although I would be saving the vicegrips or heat from anything but a hairdryer as a very last resort.

Two people grabbing close either side of the join clear of the guides and twisting not pulling should have it come apart. A very gentle tap with something very soft if it still doesn't come.

Might have to patent your mates spit as an industrial strength glue if you need anything more

if heat is what you need - go with hot steam from the kettle, it shouldnt be able to damage the glass or graphite of your rod.

Mate don't put vice grips on a rod!

I had the same problem on a T-curve deep jig. Guys here helped me.

Get a pair of rubber gloves and grip the rod above the ferul. twist the rod butt and pull. The rod will grip the rubber and bind to the skin on your hands and eventually the bond will let go.

then rub a bit of candle wax on it before putting it back together.

Rubber gloves! unstuck a mother of a bind for me.
