    Cabela's

Has anyone dealt with Cabela's in the US?
If so have experiences been good or bad?
    Anything to watch out for?
    Thanks

    Hi backhoe,

I have ordered from them once or twice and I didn't have any problems. I sent the check and they sent the goods. That was years ago though. I live pretty close to stores that sell outdoors equipment so I don't really order from catalogs very often. No shipping and handling and I get to inspect the goods in person.

I should mention that I live in the US and am unfamiliar with ordering overseas. It may make a difference in service. Don't know.

They are a LARGE company and they've been around a while so they probably are pretty straight forward. They have a good reputation for whatever that's worth.

Good luck with whatever you decide on.

    Hi,

I've bought off them before, all went well. Check out the shipping options, size and weight of packages so you don't pay too much freight.
Shop around on the other US sites for comparisions.

Please don't start a debate about the right or wrong of buying overseas.
    cheers.

I have bought gear from them quite a few times.

    Very happy.

    Prices are good.
The only issue is that for overseas orders they charge you a flat 40% of the goods value for air shipment (in my case as I live in China it is via UPS) regardles of what the actual cost would be. On the other hand it might be actually cheaper on some items (heavy, bulky).

All the shipments arrived exactly as ordered, you can track your shipment online.

    Some other things.

If you look closely at the gear under Cabela's own brand there are some very nice items there, some of them stuff made by brand name manufactures.

I had a case where I have bought 2 rods from them, the specification was "telescopic", weeel when they arrived it was a loooong rod tube for telescopic rods. They had a telescopic handle and the rod (very nice) was one piece.
After contacting their service dept. I was aked to ship them back to get the refund. I have checked shipment cost (expensive) and called them back. Was told to keep the rods and stiil got a full refund.

    Re: Cabela's

I bought a downrigger from them about 18 months ago and the landed price in Aussie dollars was fantastic. (40% of the price at any Brisbane retailer plus a 10lb lead weight thrown is as well - a $300+ saving) The product was very well packaged with notes inside about how to return the product if not satisfactory.

I have checked their prices on a few other things but there was no special benefit in buying those things from them rather than buying locally so they may not be the answer for all product categories.

When I bought from them, I could have bought the product marginally cheaper at other US sites but chose to go with them because of their reputation.

    I paid by Visa card.

Bottom line is that I would definitely use them again subject to their being cheaper than the local retailers. This may especially apply to USA made products which my downrigger is.

For example, if you zoom in on their Cabela branded rod holders you can see a smaller brand below which says "Scotty".

Some of their reels (Prestige=Daiwa Advantage) and rods also fall into the same category.
