Im hoping to get a bit of action on the landbased longtail action this year and was wondering what gear would be the most suitable? I was thinking about the overhead speedmaster? But as for rods i wouldnt have a clue. Any rigs, lures, baits, hints would be appreciated.
Also, has anyone got any specific spots on the yamba breakwall that they have caught them? Do i head right out the end or close in?
Thanks
Matt
Tld with matching rod 8' to 10' off the walls its not hard to get a good drift going with a live yakka slime or gar on a 8' rod as its almost like a cliff face in many places.
A good set up for our area is 8' or longer and a TLD20 or TLD25, the rod needs to be a match to the reel and line class.
I have a TLD25 on a Wislon Live fibre ZWS80LI from that big place in coffs ask for a deal I got mine 210 delivered they also have the TLD20 or TLD25 for 179 get the combo from them and i am sure you can get a good price and hat for free.
Line class is up to you but 8kg to 15kg is suffice off the walls and lots of it as the first run by a tuna of decent weight will be 300 plus meters. The reel must be able to handle a smoking hot run or you will have a melt down.
Remember the long gaff is essential.
Rigs vary but a bimini twist to albright with cigar float, 1.5m leader 60lb+ fluorocarbon DUEL Ailie SW is the best fluoro available and Gamakatsu Octopus Circle 4/0 to 7/0 depending on bait will fool most fish and enable you to land your first tuna and release if you wish as the circle works on a lip hookup not gut.
On the other hand Darren the ex owner from Dizzy tackle in Iluka swears by the Penn 9500ss with a good rod to match.
By the way things have been going the tuna season will not happen for some time if ever due to the dirty water....
Reports are the dirty water is reaching ten km out to sea!
I hooked up to a nice king a few weeks ago befor the rain which was awesome for the few seconds it lasted, two runs and a tail walk and it spit the hook
As far as where to fish on the Yamba wall thats something you will have to ask someone else. I would suspect the end of the wall though.
