I make may own sinkers using the posts off of big mining equipment machinery batteries picked up from the local transfer station.
Just wondering if anyone else bothers...................

Hi Fishand Dive,
Just made a swag of snapper lead for a trip to bermagui. Bloody expensive buying at $2 + a pop.
I use the tyre lead balance weights, have a mate who works for a tyre company.
Sure do. Also have a mould for making slugs. I can get 50 of them chromed for $20.00. Makes them pretty cheap when feeding them to mackerel & tuna.
i used to make my own ball sinkers....it was a bit of fun when i was bored
these days im too lazy and i just buy them
cheers tim
great fun to sit around, have a few beers with ya mates and make some sinkers. as we donate a large amount of tackle to the sea it works out a hell of alot cheaper to make 'em. don't ya just feel like pulling up a ya favourite spot and tipping the contents of tackle box over the side. yeah probably not but sometimes ya may aswell!!!!!!!
cheers

Yep we make our own as well. Only problem is trying to find the right size mold. All the ones we use have 3 sizes in them but we only want to use the middle one >
If I could just find one that had 3 that size I would be larfin
Oh the other problem with making them in the tropics... if you sweat into the molten lead it splatters ouit everywhere.. ouch.
But still 75% cheaper than buying the buggers
Me and a mate tried it a few weeks ago, the bloke down the road was showin us how he does it, we ended up leaving with a block of lead and a few sets of molds. Long story short we did it, havent had time to try the new sinkers yet, but it ended up costin us nothing for a box of sinkers, a hell of a lot cheaper for us, best of all we can borrow molds whenever we want and he says hes tryin to get rid of his lead. Why are fishermen all such nice guys
Nothin better than makin a few sinkers drinkin a few beers makin a few sinkers drinkin a few beers drinkin a few sinkers makin a few beers sinking a few beers drinkin a few sinkers Hic .
Tight lines <*)(((((((((><
Haven't bought sinkers for about 15 yrs.Sit down with a few beers and make a heap that will last at least 12 months.Just have to keep the lead supplies up.

Dazza,
You can delete if you realize you posted something, then realized you stuffed up...
I have been making my own sinkers for years, I am very careful when using lead from old batteries, apparently the steam coming from it can cause you harm. I don't hang around too close while the lead is melting down anyway, but lead weights from a few ripped cast nets are keeping me going for a while...
I am currently modifying a couple of old sinker moulds to make my own jig heads to great success. The side cutters puts notches into the barb that keeps the plastic on, all the rest works really well if you look for the mustad aberdeen 90` hook.
Scalem
have never made nor seen any made how difficult is it and what do you need molds etc
can u buy moulds for specific sizes
cheers brian
been making my own sinkers for years for lead i recycle old stuffed sinkers found on rocks at low tide lead head nails/solder / tyre weights etc .always got heaps of spares to give away to mates who don't have any moulds i used to use the old girls stove to make them on i had give that up to much naging
I used to make all my own but I've got a bit lazy and now just buy in bulk. You can easily make your own moulds as well, which means that you can replicate any sinker size or shape from a single bought specimen. You could probably do the same with jig heads, come to think of it. That would save a bit.
