2 rods and one reel usage???

    Hi folks,

I am about to get Peen 8500SS reel, i am thiniking of using it on both my 12ft surf rod (beach fishing, rock fishing) and 7 ft rod (river and boat fishing).
Just wondering will i damage the reel for taking it in and out and swapping it from time to time???

    Cheers

I remove my reels from all my rods after washing them down when I get home, this way they don't have time to get seized in place from the salt, and they are very easy to undo. I doubt you would do damage to your reel or the rods if you do this.

    Net_Surfer,
I use my Penn on a 11foot surf rod to cast lure for tailor, etc down the beach. Then I swap it to a 7 – 8foot rod to cast for mackerel and tuna in the boat. Just don’t tighten the shit out of you reel when you put it on the rod and all should be good.

I think the latest modern fishing or maybe fishing world has an article about cleaning. However I will give you the basics of what they say here.

    1) tighten your drags to prevent water getting in.
    2) give the reel and rod a wash with warm soapy water and a sponge.
    3) rinse off.
    4) dry off.
    5) loosen your drag to prevent it from getting compressed.

Step 1 and 5 are very important.

Hey net_surfer , I have an 8500ss that happily swaps from 13ft to 7, all depends what you are doing , & where. River or beach.
Not had the problem myself , but others have had problems with them breaking the shaft between reel seat & reel.

Should not cause any problems at all. I generally always pull all my reels off when returning from a trip, never know which reel I might want to use on what rod next time out. (Different breaking strain, different reel).

Re: 2 rods and one reel usage???

I always remove my reels after every trip and they are stored separately untill required. If I go away for a week or so trip I will leave them essembled but when I get home they get separated again. I have a couple of Penn 9500ss and swap them between my 2 beach rods, 2 rock/spin rods and a heavy duty boat stick without any drama at all. I have protected the reel stems because I get around with them in those bullbar type rod holders when I am cruising the beach. I did this by cutting the fingers off of leather riggers gloves and cutting the finger to the length of the stem. Then split the finger so it folds out flat and cut it to what appears the correct width to wrap around the stem. Then soak the leather in water for a day or 2 and stitch the finger onto the stem. When it dries it will shrink down and even if its a little loose it does a great job. A quicker less fancy way is to cut up an old bicycle inner tube to wrap around the stem once or twice and secure it with small cable ties.

As far as looking after any of the Penn spinfishers goes, I wash them using a soft car wash brush and cloth with soapy water and the drag done up tight. The soapy water I use is a mixture of 10 litres of water and 3 drops of a car wash liquid I use which is very mild. I then wrinse them off with running water and shake them dry and place them on an old folded towel in my shed. When I finish cleaning everything up I chamoise them dry roughly and spray them with a protectant (sorry the name eludes me but its certainly not CRC), back the drags right off to nothing and leave them on the towel overnight to dry out properly. I then store them in padded reel bags in an old chest of drawers in the shed.

As far as maintenance of a spinfisher, they are the easiest reel to strip down and put back together so don't be afraid to do this regularly. I do it once or twice a year and if the reel has been subjected to a very sandy trip or dunked in water then I do it straight away that nigth or after the trip. Keep the parts breakdown printed on the reel box or supplied separately inside the box and strip the reel on a bench or table on top of an old white sheet or curtain or similar using the parts view as a guide. This makes it easy to locate parts and stops pieces rolling away and off the table. A very good idea I read somewhere recently on a thread is to use a photocopier to increase the size of the reel parts diagram if required.

With the rods, I wash these in the same soapy water solution, rinse with the hose then chamoise dry. I then sock a tip of a rag (wifes or mums tea towels are great rags for this) in armour all and wipe this over the rod and guides and the reel seat area. I don't use it on the grip material. Be very weary of spraying CRC type lubricants on the neoprene type rod grips as it will eat the material away like white ants have been at it.
