i would go for the luna cos it got 5kg plus drag so i would had more chance to stop the fish with out my thumb grin ..... that is my next buy .... by the way i own a calucuta 400 the drag is no good cos i had to use my thumb as a extra stopping drag ... to stop the barra from heading in to the snag .... so i hope that would help you .....

If you can stomach the extra price of the TE400, I'd say go for it. The Te pulls something like 8kg of drag stock. It also has a huge gearset in it. Can't beat it, imo of course. Only disadvantage is there is no magnetic cast control, rather the VBS weights that shimano uses on most reels. I have nothing against that system though, I love it.

5 kg drag is standard with most reels these days i have a te 400 and even then the jacks seem to strip line off it so ur luna 5 kg aint gona do much exept pray the fish is headin the diferent direction as the snag btw old calcutas have 5 kg drag anyway

ur old calcutas drag must be compressed and u need new plates for you to be able to do that or u must not release ur drag when u keep ur reel in storage

    Guys ,

According to Shimano master brochure ( 2003 ) , Calcutta 400 yields a max. drag of 5 kg and Conquest 400 yields a max. drag of 7 kg . From what my Lae based friend told me , even having 10 kg drag may not guarantee a winning situation due to the fact these fishes live in areas strewn with underwater obstacles and fishing from small boat negated the amount of drag one can exert on the fish . >

be careful when rinsing your calcutta to avoid water getting past the cup on the handle, through the instant anti reverse bearing and onto the drag surfaces.

A fine mist works better than a 19mm hose without a nozzle :-)

Be nice if one of thebaitcaster manufacturers made a drag that was progressive over a few turns from say half drag to full, rather than the 1/4 turn and a grunt most seem to have. Or have I missed such a drag/reel?

To my knowledge the Calcutta and Calcutta TE are two different reels. I have a 300TE, holds 300yards of 30lb braid. With the drag wound up tight I'm flat out pulling line from the spool, and that is stock standard out of the box. Don't know how many kg of drag it is, but I did manage to snap the 30lb braid under full drag recently, with a fish in open water. Bugger, should have backed it off once clear of the timber.

If you are talking flat out drag pressure with a Carbontex kit in from Jack Erskine the Luna should be the goods. They have an extra 2 friction plates over the smaller sizes (5 versus 3) equating to 40% more surface area. My CVZ-205 with 3 Carbontex friction washers now maxes out at a tested 8-9kg up that by 40% and that's some serious stopping power!

Regarding cast controls all 300 size Milionaire based reels all have a centrifugal cast control so no advantage over Shimano in that area.

It's not really a fair comparison between both these reels, the TE Calcuttas are definitely better, but with a fair bit higher price tag.

I would happily settle for the Luna though, will perform more than adequately and has great potential for a killer drag with a simple upgrade

Re: Daiwa Luna 300 or Calcuta TE400?

I shelled out for a TE400 when they first hit the shelves in Karratha and it was he most money that I had spent on a reel (at that time!). I agonised over the purchase for a week, but I am glad I bought it. These reels are very very good. I have no problems getting 5kg drag on mine which is plenty. Yes I agree that a good size barra or jack can still pull line at this setting, but ur talking darn good size fish and depnding on your line class, a thumb assist will solve the problem. I have used my extensively throughout the Dampier archapeligo and it never let me down. I broke the clicker pawl once while servicing which I repaired with a paperclip which lasted over a year. I bought a new pawl very cheaply and easily thru my local tackle store. The drag is smooth as silk so haven't considered changing it yet.

I don't know the daiwa reel ur talking about, but I did use a top of the range small millionaire on a trip to cape don and it was one of the smoothest casting reels I ever used. It was a lot smaller than the TE400.

    Good luck

I've got a Luna 203 model for casting lures. Drag is quite poor but otherwise reel is worth its $$$!!! Will source a decent drag kit once time allows. Roddy.
