Kahle hooks ?

I asked this question on another thread about circle hooks and nobody replied. I figure that since #its off the main page I can ask again on a dedicated thread.

So where do Kahle hooks fit into all of this? #I read that of all the hooks they tend to gut hook more fish, yet they are supposed to be a non-strike hook, designed to catch the fish when it turns and runs for cover like trout do. I have used them on the reef for trout, held firmly on a handline without striking. #I was advised that this technique is used to ensure that the trout didnt brick me on the coral. It worked too #- I dont recall missing any fish on a #decent bite and they all seemed to be lip or at least mouth hooked. None were gut-hooked

Regarding the circles, if I was using 6/0 Kahles, would 6/0 circles be the corresponding hook to try?. #The one's I have seen seem to be very heavy guage.

I've never used circle hooks before, but I'm a huge fan of kahle hooks. In fact, they're the only hooks that I ever use. One of the best inventions ever.

I got to check the circle hook thread because if circle hooks are better than kahle hooks, then I'll change over to them.

About the size of hook to use. I usually don't look at the numbers. I just look at the size of the hook and then buy that. Then only when I'm satisfied with the size, then I'll remember what number to buy next time for that particular kind of fishing. Probably the same would be for the circle hooks. If a 6/0 kahle is significantly different in bend size than 6/0 circle, then don't bother about the numbers. Just compare the physical sizes themselves.

Hi Tony.
After a bit of experimentation with circle style hooks, including the 'Black Magic'
kahle pattern, I'm now a devout fan of Mustad Fine Wire Demon hooks. These seem to be a non off-set circle hook, but are a finer guage than either Gamakatsu or Black Magic offerings. I was rather disapointed with the Black Magics, they were a comparatively heavy guage and rusted up very quickly.
The Gamas were beaut hooks, but I've come to prefer the non-offset style
Mustads. In the short time i've been using them I haven't missed a hook-up, just let the fish move off and/ or start winding in gear. Catches have included 10 Nthn. Bluefin and 13kg cobia, so I'm rapt in them, to say the least. I can't take to them for beach fishing however, enjoy striking the bite too much, but for outside work, luv 'em!

Nigel, I'll check those Mustad demons out. Not sure that I would want anything finer than a Gamakatsu just in case the snodger turned up and bent it on me

If it is chemically sharpened, it wont bend but break instead. I have only had it happen once, but experimenting afterwards with a pair of pliers and chem. sharpened hooks, they break every time.
