Newbys seek advice re buying rod & reel for sea??

    Hey Guys and Gals

Thank for all the advice that you have given us already!

We are looking to buy two rods and reels for fishing off the beach, in the surf. Our neighbour suggests buying a rod between 12 - 14 foot long. We are on a tight budget (having just migrated)and the kit appears very expensive in the proper fishing shops. We have had a look on ebay. Has anyone bought any stuff from ebay, was it any good.

Also, re the reel should we go with an alvey type or egg-beater type. A man at the market said that the alvey were easier to clean if you get sand on them. Is that true?

Would it be better to buy the rod and reel as a kit, as we are such novices. What are other pros and cons?

We look forward to your replies.

    Heya Spinkways

It might be good to answer a few questions first just so you get suitable recommendations,

When you say beach fishing do you mean surf fishing with big rolling waves and sand, or just from shore in a river or bay?

Would you be looking to catch smaller species like whiting, bream, flathead etc or bigger fish larger tailor jew?

When you are just starting out unless you have abundant patience or will be fishing with someone else that knows an area targeting smaller fish can be a lot more fun than waiting hours for a single big fish to maybe happen along into your area.

    Hi Thanks for your reply.

We will be fishing in surf, Mooloolaba. Not sure what we wana catch, something big enough to eat. We are having a go with our smaller rods later using prawns.

    Thanks
