Angler Rods - any comments
Hi,
I have had a few problems with Angler rods - has anyone else had the same troubles?
I have had 2 Taipan rods (10 - 15kg), both of the them broke - I got them replaced under warrenty; $50 replacement fee. Both broke in the same area, between 3rd and fourth runner (from top of the rod).
When the second Taipan broke I replaced it with a 8 - 10kg Spiraflex rod (Barra Champion BTX-4B). The Taipan was no longer being made so I got this rod, it was my choice to go for the 8 - 10kg, rather than 10-15kg.
I used the new rod twice, on the second occassion the rod broke in half, between the bottom runner and the next runner up. This should be the strongest part of the rod and definately not the place that a rod should snap.
I was using 20lb fireline with a 40lb trace, the rig was hooked up on the reef, I tried to get the rig off the bottom, I probably only had the rod at 50/70% of capacity (bend) and snap the rod was in two pieces. Reel was a Calcutta 400 and I didn't have the drag locked up.
The rod is under guarantee, I haven't asked Angler Rods whether I will get a new rod or not.
I'm not sure why the rod snapped in two, I read the Angler rod brochure and there was no suggestion that the Spiraflex was a graphite rod. My thoughts were it was a fibreglass rod, but if it is a graphite then I guess the rod received a knock that caused the rod to snap.
I dont think I will be going back for an Angler Rod in a hurry.

One more comment:
I took what I had left of my broken rod to Angler Rods (Coopers Plains) and they exchanged the my rod for a new one - under the warranty.
No questions asked - so that was very very good.
I will try to take care of the new rod, they do have graphite in them.
Cheers

Again the Aussie fishing public is sucked into paying for a warranty that must be meet by the manufacturer in any case. I would take the latest breakage back to the tackle shop and demand your money back, by law they must because the rod has not meet your expectations. I could only imagine if I charged several thousands for a chair rod only to have the thing break because of a fault of mine and then tell the buyer he has to pay X amount to get a new one…..laughable if you ask me. Don’t leave the shop till you have the cash in your pocket mate. Most times these guys wouldn’t know what a fish looks like.
Most of the guys I know in the blank Game don’t go fishing. Even if they employ fishing gurus its one thing to say how a rod should bend and react but it’s an entire different ball game when it comes time to actually roll the thing with all parameters in mind built into the blank.

I have 2 Angler rods,
The first my oldest son uses at sea, 10/15kg, only problem we've had was a shattered runner that cost quite a bit of braid before it was noticed. The rod has worked hard on some good fish for no other probs.
The other is a 37kg roller-tip, not had the chance to use it to its full potential yet.

I have eight custom rods made on Pacific Composite blanks, the same as those used by Angler Rods and they range in age from 2 to 5 years, I have never had a fault with the rods and have used them for some way out of class fishing, eg 6-8 kgblank for bottom bashing with 50lb braid and fished it hard, also trolled same outfit up in the Gulf and hooked up on fish big enough to break 50 lb braid. 4kg spin stick with 15kg mono for jacks in the snags, however I have seen one PC blank with a blister in it on the inside that caused a weakness about where your spiraflex broke. PC/Angler are generally very good quality wise. I personally have no problems with Them.

I have 2 braid busters and they are great rods, never had any issues with them at all. And I have given them both some serious stick on sambos over here in the west. If they can handle them, then they are usually good for anything....

I have a Braid Buster(Pacific Composite blank) which has become my favourite Barra rod, fish it with 20lb fireline on a calcutta 250, has had plenty of knocks and still going strong.

won one on Nugget's radio show last weekend. Thanks Nugget and River City Marine!
7' 1-2kg spin stick, with a very flashy looking 2000 size eggbeater; came with metal spool and spare plastic spool.
Looks ok to me, spool it up today with 4lb fireline and will chuck lures at bait up the Pine tomorrow when we take our 13 month old daughter out for her second trip in the tinny.
Very fussy rod builder mate of mine from down South loves Pacific Composite blanks. I have one of his braidbusters, and it's nice.
