    baitcast outfit for impoundment barra.

    Hi,

Have been using my abu garcia ambassaduer outfit spooled with 30lb braid for barra in Awoonga dam. Have caught many fish on it, best being 25kg but I always worry about losing the big ones on the reel because the drag isnt very smooth. Just wondering what would be a good rod and reel to upgrade to, willing to spend $200 - $300. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    cheers maat

25 kg barra , now that is huge and I can only dream about it . Congratulation .

Assuming you are fishing from a boat , I would use #200 in Shimano round type baitcaster which can accomodate almost 200m of PE3 line and I wud choose a better quality reel with 5 kg max. drag which is smooth up to that max. rating .

If you are fishing from the bank of the lake / dam with 25 kg barra around , you may need a
bigger reel and perhaps a #300 or even #400 in Shimano range albeit the latter is a bit heavy for all day casting , in my opinion . The bigger reels have higher max. drag and possibly can accomodate 300m PE3 line .

Recently I got stripped by a barra when using my #100 Shimano reel with 100m line in the spool , the barras would be around 6-8 kg fish only so one can only imagine if it were a 25 kg barra !
I was fishing from the bank of a large impoundment pond .

Save your money and drop Jack erskine an email and pick up a set of his carbon-tex washers for your abu! I fitted them in my 4600c3 and the difference has been day and night in smoothness!!!

If you just keen on a new reel then perhaps a daiwa saltist HRF, shimano curado or pfleugar supreme. Should be able to get all these for about 250.

Hi mate there is a lot of reel on the market you can buy ,the thing to do is get one that you like and befor you use it send it to Jack Erskine to fine tune the drag system etc, and on the rod side I would go for a custom rod mainly because they are built to suit what type of fishing you are going to do , try the Cairns rod builders as they build heaps for that type of dam fishing .
