I was thinking of the Shimano Tyrnos T-Curve 10-15kg rod to match my upcoming purchase of a Tyrnos 20. I am now wondering if this is the best all round rod. I am willing to spend money, but not be excessive obviously. I would like to troll, jig and live bait around Brisbane with this combo.
A Wilson Live Fibre has been mentioned.
Any help on this (please include model) would be appreciated,
Mick,
no self-respecting fisherman will tell you there is a good allround rod or reel (or atleast not infront of the wife)
You will allways have to compromise...or buy anther outfit!!
You need to look at what type of fishing you will be doing MOST and get the rod best suited for that...
If you mainly live bait / bottom bash / Jig then you want a longer rod with a sensitive tip but lots of power when you need it. A Live Fibre ZWS70XJ (7' 15-24kg) would be a good choice. (Note: if fishing floaters or live baiting you would probably use mono on the Tyrnos 20 whereas for bottom fishing /jigging you'd be better off with braid...unfortunately you can't quick change spools on a tyrnos.......I see another outfit coming on )
If you do a lot of trolling you want a shorter stiffer rod of about 6' preferably with roller tip or full rollers if chasing Billfish. The Tyrnos rods aren't too bad other than not having rollers. You can go up to a lovely T-Curve for more $$. TIP: You can still pick up the older Shimano Backbone rods at the "Marts" for <$100 - these are fantastic for the price, I got 2 full roller 24kg's (to fish 15kg) after advice from some GC Billfish pro's.
Thanks for the info Blue. I will probably have to buy two outfits then (especially whilst the Tyrnos 20s are $229). I would be mainly live baiting around the channel markers in Moreton Bay, but also want to drift pillies for pelagics and drop a line at some of the reefs.
Wish there was an easy way. I seem to have all the gear and no-idea, and it just keeps getting worse/or better depends on wether its me or the wife looking at it.
Mick,
from your reply I'd say the ZWS70XJ would be a top choice for your Tyrnos 20 (I have exact combo for reef fishing so could be a bit biased ).
If you're serious about another reel and 2 Live Fibres I'd recommend checking out Sundown Marine at Redcliffe. They will meet or beat most other prices and/or give you a special Ausfish discount!
