The new boat is here! now I need some new gear!

    Hi Guys

Our new boat arrived yesterday (2 1/2 years old but new to us) Very excited! Have to order some Ausfish stickers now!

Even more so after going to Webby's talk last night! Lots of notes taken Thanks Webby and Jeremy for the invite via Ausfish!

I have only ever fished at Caloundra in the Pumicestone Passage for bream, whiting and what ever else you can pick up. I have a Alvey reel and a Whippy Extra Angler rod that I have had for 20 odd years.

I realise that I need a totally different setup for fishing in Moreton Bay. We are hoping to get some snapper etc.

So any suggestions on what would be suitable my first rod and reel would be greatly appreciated! Also any suggestions of brands of line, etc, would be great!

We are looking to head over to Sundown Marine on Monday for a look but if anyone can suggest any other places to have a look at - that would be great!

Lots of talk about the ABU 6500 - they seem very popular! Would something like this be suitable for what I am hoping to do?

Congratulations Janine! Always great to get a hold of a new toy
What sort of boat is it? Got any pics of your new pride and joy?
The guys at Sudown will take care of you no worries.
The Abu Garcia reels certainly do seem to be popular these days - they are a great bit of gear. Hope you catch heaps!

Shimano baitrunner 6500 or 4500 matched with a 7-8' rod with some 8 kg mono is a pretty good way to get started. Will handle bay snapper and sweetlip and also bigger stuff like cobia, tuna and mackerel. Don't go thinking that you have to fish heavy to catch big fish. You get alot more bites fishing light and with a good drag and patience, you can win most battles.

I use an ABU6500 baitcaster for school and spotty mackerel, mainly for floating a pilchard out. Works well.

Gotta laugh at your post Janine.

I got my boat and went shopping for gear too

The best advice I can offer is do the research at the tackle dealers, then try where you can to buy second hand (See Aisfish Classifieds) / e-bay etc - in the long run you can save quite a bit.

I've got 4 Okuma LB-80 Baitfeeder reels for sale at a very reasonable price if you're interested in doing a bit of Snapper fishing in the Bay. Give me a call on 0409 618 068 if you're interested.

    Cheers,
    NICK.
