On the weekend I broke my rod that I use for my SP fishing and was not happy.
It was a 4-6kg light/medium 7' graphite rod used with 8lb braid. I do most of my fishing in the estuaries and is this a bit heavy for the estuaries of the goldy?
Should I just replace the rod or get a lighter outfit all together?
If I go lighter will I be able to handle the occasional Trev and cod?
Did you have any trouble casting SP's with the heavier rod or think it was too hard to feel soft bites? If not then stick with the class of rod you are used to, dropping down to a 2 - 4kg rod shouldn't cause too many problems handling big-ish fish - I use a 2 - 4kg rod for almost all my estuary SP fishing and haven't had any problems landing cod, big flatties or trevs.
Good advise guys I use a 2-4kg rod with 8 and 14lb braid and haven't had a problem!! caught some big fish on it although i have lost some beauties too a heaver rod may have made the difference (being able to turn the fish quicker and harder) but then i may not have been able to land the light jighead hard up against the bank and enticed the fish in the first place its nearly a catch 22. since loosing a few good fish I now have 2 combos for the esturys, light for Breaming and heavy (6-8kg rod with 20lb braid) for the bigger plastics chasing Jacks, big flathead and Jew.
Go for a 1-3kg or 2.4kg, 4-6 is an overkill for river plastic fishing for bream, flatties trevs and cod. I have caught more than my fair share of decent flathead on a 2-4kg rod wth 6lb braid including a 65cm golden trevally which was some fun.
I reckon i will get a new outfit for the estuaries.
I will go will a 2-4kg rod matched with a new reel and 4lb/6lb braid and the reel from the broken rod will be at home on an old powerstick for bait fishing.
It also gives me an excuse to ease that tackle addiction of mine.

for esturies i also reccomend 1-3kg or 2-4kg.. they would handle most things you will encounter..
i got one of each and use 4 and 6lb braid with em and they are perfect..
It was a $120 Pfluger combo form my local tackle store. It was my first attempt at an SP outfit and fishing and did not want to spend much on it, so I just took the advise of the fella at the tackel shop.
The rod itself did not look that grand at all but I have found the reel to have a smooth drag, althogh is does not like the salt much.
