Depends what you want to spend, because you mentioned the Shimano Raider which is around $100~ this is prob one of the better rods in this price range, if you can afford to spend $200+ go for a loomis, you can't beat a lifetime warranty.

As for reel the 300 would be ok, i once read on this forum that some of the locals at Awoonga use upto 60lb braid and i'd imagine they'd be using 300 size daiwas. But yeh the 300 would not really be an overkill.

I'd use the daiwa reel for trolling and the shimano reel for casting. The raider is a descent rod and although the loomis is better, its probably too light for impoundment barra. My advice would be to use 50lb main/80lb leader for casting into the sticks and 30lb main and 50lb leader for trolling.
good luck, hope you get a metre plus barra!

    Hi edaw,
    # # # # # # #I fished Awoonga with three outfits and landed my best Barra on the lightest one I took,114cm on 12 lb Bionic spooled on a Diawa Millionaire light (103 size) attached to a 6-12 lb Loomis crankbait rod.But I also had a fish dump 40 yards of 30lb Bionic (On the heavy outfit) in the blink of an eye and wipe me out.Trolling you can afford to go light,But if ya casting around structure I don't think there's anything that will turn 50 to 60 lb of Barra on the spot.If you can apply the pressure to do this make sure you have your skis on cause you'll be ripped from the boat!Alot of regulars were fishin 50 and 60 lb gear over 6 to 10 kg sticks.I hope you get a chance to see why.I have some nice outfits for sale but are highend and a bit pricey,But cheaper than new.Daiwa Millionaire reels and rods from Loomis and Megabass. The Megabass rods are truly a sight to behold and in my personal opinion make all others look like rangoons.
