    Surf Spinning Reel

I am looking to get a resonably priced surf spinning combo. The main purpose will be chucking slugs at Tailor. I have plenty of Alveys but have seen myself outfished when it comes to chucking slugs.

I was interested in the TSS4 (especially when it was on special at that store not to named for $99, but they are out of stock now apparently.) I see it is now on special at BCF with a bonus tackle bag for $139.

The store person at A-FFFArt tried to steer me towards an Okuma reel but I realise I have no knowledge of just what alternatives are out there.

So looking for help, am interested in reels up to $150 but preferably lower. I don't want to spend too much on a spinning reel that will mainly see beach work.

    Cheers

    Hiya.
A buddy of mine uses Okuma Epix, he loves 'em.
The TSS4 is very highly regarded, purpose-built for surf spinning, might be worth hunting around to get one at the right price, IMO.
Pretty good value even at $139, but you might be able to do better, or swing some sort of a deal, ie free line etc etc!
    Cheers.

    Re: Surf Spinning Reel

i,d take the tss4 for slug .... i was thinking about buying one but i shoped around and i found a better reel which is a twinpower 6000 or 8000 size which they have 15kg drag it could catch a big jewfish with it no worries .... but they will be around 300buck ... as i might take the twinpower for over all use ...

    tss4 is really cheap ...

but u could buy three of them for one twinpower reel ...grin...

The TSS4 is pretty basic in that there are only three bearings to worry about. Sand and salt dont seem to hurt them too much.

    Re: Surf Spinning Reel

the TSS4 is a simple light reel that can cop a little bit of abuse. However, it is a little rough compared to the epix and can be prone to some problems with lots of use.
The epix is heavier, much more complex internally and would need to be looked after a little more than the tss4. Personally this is no problem as i service my reels myself on a regular baisis.
personal coice basically. however, be aware that the tss4 is no longer in production, so limited stocks are avaliable, hence some companies have no more in stock
    cheers

A touch above your budget, but I am a huge fan of the Shimano Spheros 14000FA. May want to investigate that as it has the capability of taming 35kg sambos - so its versatility will cover more bases than the Epix or TSS4.

recently landed a 20-25lb tuna in the eastuary(1770) using the tss-4 found it great for chucking the slugs, good speed and a decent drag though only using 20lb mono on it.

Have a look at the daiwa Emcast 6000.. It's what I have and a mate went for over the tss4... Better line recovery then the tss4 and a much better spool for long casting...
for some info look here http://www.daiwa.com/Reel/spinning.aspx

I use a Speros 14000F outcasts a TSS and just better all round, I did use a Penn 850SS for nearly 15 years superb reel the larger diameter spool means it retrieves line just as quick as the TSS, the TSS is dated technology no long cast, too flexible etc etc, but it still catches large fast fish so for a relatively cheap reel it is damn good.

    Re: Surf Spinning Reel

I have an Okuma CD90 for my surf spinning and run 20lb fireline on it and I love it, especially the stainless steel gears and sealed bearings, not to mention the baitrunner function and it's built for the salt. I've only ever needed to wash it under a tap at the end of the day and it still spins up faultlessly. I don't think they make them any more but you can still pick up old stock around the place and on ebay. I think the replacement model is the Eclipz EC90.
    I fish therefore I am
