Which reel for flicking slugs?

Please read before posting tss4...

I currently have 2 reels which are both capable of flicking slugs with a relatively fast retrieve, without either being ideal...

The matchup is a baitrunner 4500 vs a symetre 4000..

The baitrunner has a bigger spool, higher line retrieve per crank etc..

The symetre has significantly less line capacity... 0.8 lb more drag, much higher ratio, less line retrieve per crank (but perhaps each crank is quicker/easier) ...

I have somewhat overlooked my symetre untill reading one of nuggets articles in which there was mention of a symetre used for this purpose..

The rod im going to match it too is a 6-8 kg 7foot live fibre, which its self is not ideal either, but does the job... not sure on whether to run braid or mono....

I will probably give them both a go, but im keen to hear ausfishers input..

go the symetre. you don't want to be casting a heavy baitrunner all day.

Symetry has the 6:1 retrieve rate so i would be going that! Spool it up with 20-30lb braid and an adequet lever and You will be in business!

I have Symetre 4000 myself, occasionally found the drag is not strong enough if hooked the bigger fish. But only occasionally, generally it work very well for this type of work! As Jeremy87 said, you want the reel and rod as light as possible.

i have a daiwa capricorn 4500j on a im-6 daiwa coastal tournament inshore special with 6kg braid fantastic outfit but expensive i have landed a 20kg cobia on this gear i chase long tail bigest 18kg it out cast anything i no and you can realy crank that slug in ask your local tackle shop and have a look

I have the symetre 4000 with 10lb braid, on a 7'6" 6-8kg excell weapon rod. easy to cast all day.
maybe use 20lb braid and max the drag. The bigger longtail would give it a workout but if your in a boat you can chase them down.

the live fibre symetre combo would be good i reckon.

sounds like a good setup... i already own both these reels, not looking to buy another...

6kg braid might be a good option.. what sort do you use?

i have a daiwa capricorn 4500j with 300m of 20lb fins braid .. so i,d say why not you try them cos they have 9kg drag whhoooo.... you won,t have a problem with big fish ... as i have caught 13kg golden trevelly on it no problem cos the drag keep him doing the hard work hehe .... but i know the speed is not fast enough but it,s okay ... as it got 4.9-1 ratio .. as the bait runner got 4.8-1 ratio ... so close to each other ...

what are peoples opinions on the line to use, is a lighter mono going to cast further or braid?

No. a good quality braid will cast up to 10 yards further than the best mono. I am in the process of purchasing a similar outfit to you and i will be putting either a 4000 stradic or sustain an a 7'6" daiwa coastal tournament with 15lb braid. if you choose the 4000 15lb is probably the heaviest i would run on it for several reasons. Firstly running the appropriate drag setting for 20lb line will put too much strain on the reel and will decrease its life span. Secondly your rod is not rated for greater than 8kg line and finally you will cast 15lb line further than 20lb. When i say good quality braid i do not mean fireline (though it will still cast further than mono) a soft braid with a thin diametre is best. Tuffline is great value for money but if you want to you can spend up on the likes of pe braid.

Ey Jeremy a few guys I have spoken to who do a fair bit of spinning have said the last few differnt types of braid they used were resulting in annoying wind knots in the braid and they have both gone back to fireline now

I think I might give fireline a go to begin with, if I don't like it i'll try something else
